Can you help me find a skirt for my mother in law

I'm hoping the experts on here can help me. My mother in law is 92 and has dementia. She's always been very well dressed and particular about how she looks. Since she's had carers to help her washing and dressing we've discovered that a lot of her clothes were too big or too small for her. In particular the long floaty skirts she likes in summer. We can't really take her shopping because she's frail but also she's not able to cope with any choice, she just gets stuck in a loop and comes away with nothing after many hours 😱. She's getting very distressed that she isn't dressed how she'd like to be.
Can you help me find something suitable for her online that I can order?
Ankle length, floaty/chiffon type fabric maybe with lining underneath, crucially an elasticated waist. A-line or gathered rather than pleated. Pastel/floral patterns go down well.
I'm very much jeans and t-shirt style of dress so I have no idea where to find this and anything I have seen in the shops has a fixed waistband rather than an elasticated one.
Amy and all suggestions welcome

Bon marche usually have skirts with elasticated waists. Might be worth a look .

Check the labels in her clothes, see where she liked to buy when she was more independent.

luckylavender · 20/06/2026 08:06

Bon Marche definitely. Also New Look and Next and Monsoon.

Try Roman, Freeman's online, Cotton Traders possibly.

Boden Rosaline and Seasalt Rose A line skirt might fit the bill.

These are all great suggestions. Definitely lots in here that will work. Thank you all so much ❤️

Edinburgh Woollen Mill may have some. I get things for my mum there.

I buy replacement stuff for my old person on vinted.

i just search the details of the item already owned! Mostly M&S cardigans.

Damart also good for this kind of thing - MIL gets her clothes there https://www.damart.co.uk/c-337215-printed-skirts?bottom_length_label[0]=41%22&bottom_length_label[1]=33%22

A word of warning on Damart - they are an unprincipled bunch of thieves who prey on the elderly. I say this because my mum has ordered a lot of things from them, and I discovered, when I took over her phone account and put a £5 cap on for extras not included in the contract, that Damart use a premium rate phone number for sales, and keep you talking as long as possible so that you spend a considerable amount on the phone call. My mum was cut off before she could finish her order, due to the £5 cap, which turned out to be not enough to actually place an order.

It does say on the catalogue that they use a premium rate number - I think they have to do this by law. But it is really not obvious, and my mum had no idea. Yes, there are other ways to order, but I think it is really underhand to charge people for placing orders.

How strange! I was just wondering what to do with my dear grandmothers clothes and this was the first message I saw when I came to mumsnet. They are all bon marche. Light easy wash although mid calf rather than ankle

My mother, in her eighties, likes a company called Carr and Westley, who are mail order. They are a company aimed at mature ladies and have lots of elasticated waist skirts. M and S and EWM also have more classic designs. If you know her size, you could look at Vinted and these brands, including the vintage, classic labels such as St. Michael for M and S might well have the types of skirts she favours.

Thank you everyone who replied, this has been so helpful.
I've ordered two of the maxi length skirts from Roman Originals linked above so fingers crossed they'll work. She specifically wants maxi length for summer so she doesn't have to wear tights.
It seems that for several years she's been wearing skirts that won't fasten at the waist, or that are falling down and need constant hoiking up. I've had to hide those because they are a trip hazard but hopefully these new skirts will do the trick for her.

If she likes what she has, it's just that they don't fit. It's worth a look on Vinted to see if you can find the same thing but just a different size.
Could also try eBay but I find Vinted easier to search if you're looking for something specific.

Try The Able label. They specialise in clothes catering for older people. They have adapted clothing to make items easy to get on, off etc.I used for my late mother and they were reliable and a good company.
