Hello!

I don't really know where to start but I'm after some advice if possible.

I've never been that great with make up. I used to be able to do my foundation, blusher basic eyes etc and ready for a night out. I try and put foundation on now and it looks bloody awful. It goes patchy and sits in my coming wrinkles. I guess the best way to describe it is it looks dry and powdery.

I keep seeing Laura Geller being advertised for mature skin and it has a baked foundation but I can't afford that - especially to find out it looks as bad as collection or Barry m 😂

I'm only 39 but I don't have nice skin (acne and uneven). I'd like to look pretty every now and then. Does anyone have any tips, suggestions or recommendations? I only have a small budget (don't we all!).

Thank you 🙏

It sounds like you need to do more 'skin prep' (skin care before you put on makeup) and that will make the biggest difference. I'd then focus on your base, but with light glowy layers, avoid foundation! Here are some high-street suggestions:

  1. Milky toner to apply before moisturiser. Go for 2 layers if you can wait for it to dry down a bit. I like Anua (amazon), Byoma (boots) also do one.
  2. Nice thick moisturiser of your choice! + SPF of course
  3. Glowy base with some light coverage. The Loreal Lumi Glotion is fantastic (dupe for the Charlotte Tilbry one, i think it's even better)
  4. Concealer. Apply this just under your eyes and pin point onto blemishes. No need to cover your whole face!
  5. Glowy cream or liquid blush - even better if you can do a blush/bronzer in one. I like the Loreal Lumi stick in the warm bronze for that reason.
  6. Bit of mascara - and ALWAYS curl lashes!
  7. Eyebrows - can you get them laminated? If not, a good brush and pencil does wonders (lots of people skip, but its really important to frame the face as we get older and general face shape gets less defined)

I promise that your face will look a million times better with less coverage - glowy and hydrated but imperfect looks waaay better than cakey foundation over spots!

@ranchdressingthanks so much for the swift reply!

I actually moisturise in the morning with an SPF and in the evening with aqueous so nice and thick there.
Luckily I wasn't an over plucker so have all my brows 😂 I do get them tidied periodically.

I will look into points 1, 3 and 4 also. Thank you

Maybe you need some of the aqueous in the morning as well. Plus the spf
