How to cull my wardrobe without regretting it?

MoreDresses · 17/06/2026 13:05

I need to cull some clothes. I have two double wardrobes, eight drawers and a chest of shoes and I wear approximately 6 outfits. I need a cull. But how?! Any advice, that isn't "does it bring me joy" would be appreciated. I don't want to regret my decisions but also I don't want to hang on to clothes I literally never wear or wear once in a blue moon!

I'm doing this too. Its not easy I have the what ifs in my head. What I've started doing is just bagging stuff up I know I've not worn for 6 months or I dont feel comfortable in. Then if I miss anything or think of a outfit that could work with that bagged up item I get it back out. Most of the time I don't get a single thing out. Then I schedule a clothes collection or it goes in the car to the charity shop. I'm yet to regret anything.

I'll be following for tips too.

WeatherOrNothing · 17/06/2026 13:08

Do a color and body analysis. That way you will get rid of the colors that aren’t in your palette and work against you.
Then get rid of the clothes that do not suit your body shape from the body shape analysis. You probably don’t reach for those items because you know somehow they don’t suit you.
Once you’re left with all the clothing that actually do suit you, start wearing them to see how you feel. If they really then don’t bring you ‘joy’ or make you feel good about yourself then get rid.
That’s exactly what I did.

KrazyboutKillian · 17/06/2026 13:10

So maybe you have duplicates or very similar items , ie white shirts , blue jeans ? Pick your two favourite and get rid of the others , as you will never go to them as you have preferred options

do you have a colour palette?
anything that doesn’t ‘ work ‘ should go

and anything tired , dated , in need of repair should go

trying to follow my own advice

KiddyMcKiddly · 17/06/2026 13:12

At the beginning of a season, I turn the clothes for that season around so that the hanger is the "wrong" side of the rail. Then if I wear the item I hang it back up right way round. At the end of the season all the clothes with un-turned hangers go to the charity shop. Yet to regret.

MoreDresses · 17/06/2026 13:17

Great tips so far thank you.

How do I do a colour analysis?

I definitely have that fear of letting go choices, some don't even fit me any more and I know(!) that realistically they won't and my life won't be miserable if I get rid of items. Yet still I cling on to them as if they are a life raft.

Do you know the reasons why you only wear those 6 outfits? The answer to that might be better for you than the joy notion.

I've just done a clear out that included things I had previously set aside to sell, and I ended up taking some things back from that group. Most unhelpful.

The things I've been able to let go of have a specific reason why they aren't ever chosen, but I have lots of clothes. Even with rotating everything so that it all gets used means that any specific item probably doesn't get more than 10 wears a year. So I'm the ōpposit to you in that regard.

Would you be interested/curious or unsettled/uncomfortable if you put your 6 outfits away for a few weeks to try out the rest of your wardrobe?

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 17/06/2026 13:25

Would you be more inclined to let go if you were selling on Vinted and getting a few quid for each item?

Biffatcrafts · 17/06/2026 13:26

I had to cull mine too, and I hate throwing clothes away as I sew and often use material from clothes as practice pieces or for other patchwork things.

The only thing that worked for me was the reverse hanger tip. You have all your hangers with hooks facing forwards, then as you wear things you put them back after wearing/washing with the hooks facing backwards. After 3 months you then pull out the backwards ones (stuff you have worn) and if possible move them to a separate section or space in your wardrobe. This is stuff you will definitely keep.

You then go through all the stuff you haven't worn and decide on a set number of items to either donate, throw away, or recycle. But you only choose items that would have been appropriate for that season (spring, summer, autumn and winter) - you don't, for example throw away winter jumpers in June because you very well might regret that.

Also you start with stuff that is ripped, stained, stretched or just looking tatty, too big or too small.

In my case I chose 10 items - although there were probably more like 50 or 60 items I hadn't worn at that point.

After the first round of doing this I still had a lot of stuff I needed to cull, so I did it again after the next 3 months. Then repeated it for the rest of the year (4 batches in total). I really did get rid of a lot of stuff that way and didn't regret anything I got rid of. I do it now as a habit every 3 months and actually kind of look forward to it.

Hopefully it might work for someone else.

StylishAndBeautiful · 17/06/2026 13:33

Work on how much clothes storage you have.
If you have a t-shirt drawer, go through all your t-shirts and put them away, favourites first. What doesn't fit in the drawer goes in the charity shop bag.

Do the same with jumpers, sweatshirts, dresses, trousers etc.

Anything that doesn't fit, needs hemming etc, in the charity bag it goes.
Anyrthing you've never worn - get rid.
Anything you don't remember buying - get rid.
Put the bags in the boot of the car.

Once you're sure you can get rid of them, go to a large charity shop where they'll take several bags at once.

Difficulty101 · 17/06/2026 13:49

I am going to cull anything polyester. Some crept into my wardrobe when DC was young as it seemed easy care. It feels rubbish on and doesn't even look that nice.

MoreDresses · 17/06/2026 13:52

I'm happy to sell clothes. I just have a distinct lack of time. I have a disabled child which takes up most of my free time and I wear clothes that are easy to wear around him. Not necessarily because I like them.

My "fancy" clothes don't fit my current lifestyle and I hate pointless changing throughout the day so tend to wear things I can wear for the day - this is where the six outfits come in.

I think maybe I need to go through things I haven't worn in over six months and then leave somewhere and if they don't get reached for, I'll cull. I also like tatty and old to go too. That makes a lot of sense!

I am trying really hard to reduce my clothes too - I have stuff spilling out of cupboards but like you wear a very small percentage and frequently feel i have nothing to wear.
I have sold a lot of stuff on vinted, I found getting abit of cash back helps.
I got rid of a lot of jeans (like 20+ pairs) and starting off with the least flattering and also I suppose the cheapest that I didn't feel really owed me anything.

More recently I have moved onto items that hasn't even been worn and let go of the fact that I have wasted so much money!

Some of the trickiest items I have found are things that I have loved/still love but realistically wouldn't wear, but that have no particular value on vinted. I have started to move these into a charity pile.

I have very occasioanally resurrected items from the distant past and thought that justified keeping so much 'just in case' but the reality is that is probably 5 items in say the past ten years and if I hadn't been able to find said item it wouldn't have been the end of the world.

The putting things in bags to see if you miss them is definitely a good idea - I found a suitcase full of clothes last week that I thought I had already got rid of. Straight into the charity bag with those!

Ineedanewsofa · 17/06/2026 13:59

Have had to do this fairly recently, my top tips:
Does it fit? (Not just waist but sleeves, legs, boobs, body length etc)
Is it in good condition?
Do I have more than one of it? (Caveat here, exact item in exact colour, I still have multiple pairs of jeans but now only one dark blue barrel pair)
Is it for a specific purpose? (Gym/hobby clothes)
Do I still like it?
Do I still like it on me?
Have I got anything in the diary in the next 6 months where I will wear it?
Be ruthless!
Also I have system whereby anything I list for sale stays up for max 3 weeks, if it hasn’t sold it goes to the charity shop. Otherwise bags of stuff hang around for ages and make me feel cluttered.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/06/2026 14:47

I started with all those things that I thought I liked, but in reality I always took them off and put something else on.
Anything remotely uncomfortable or didn't fit that I hadn't or couldn't alter.
Then duplicates, (unless basics like vests).

SoScarletItWas · 17/06/2026 14:55

‘Does it spark joy’ doesn’t work for me either because yes, everything does, that’s why I bought it!

Ask yourself:
Does this work for specific occasions only and have I got any of those coming up this year?

Could I replace this or buy something similar/better if I needed it?

And the age old ‘have I worn this in the past year’ and if not get rid!

Swissmeringue · 17/06/2026 15:11

If you haven't worn it in the past year, get rid of it.

If it's not comfortable, get rid of it.

If it's an event/occasion dress and in future when you're going to a similar event you're likely to want to buy something new, get rid of it.

If "it'll fit if I lose half a stone" off with it's head.

I did it with Style me happy. Her name is Emily and she’s spot on.

SaferHaven · 17/06/2026 15:16

The beauty of Vinted as that generally anything you get rid of if you regret it you’ll find it on there!

Ive done it with an old dress I regretted getting rid of plus as some of my clothes have gone past their best but I still love them I just re-order them new with/without tags and bin the old one.

SelfCareHan · 17/06/2026 17:33

I did this recently and just looked at pieces I haven't worn in the last year as I know I wouldn't miss them. Also used Vinted to sell a lot of it so that was a nice positive and don't regret it at all

OneNewEagle · 17/06/2026 18:13

I cleared most of my wardrobe last year. I had been doing it in stages. I have just what I wear now.

I pack unpack summer winter clothes so each time the stuff least worn I got rid of as I unpacked. When I repacked got rid of stuff that had worn out during the season or that I hadn’t worn.

for summer depending on the weather I now have leggings and tops, vests and tshirts etc to go with shorts, nice skirts and cropped trousers to go with the same tops and a few summer dresses. And a few cardigans and jumpers.

i am replacing things as they wear out not before.

There’s already a few things I’m not wearing as not comfy when I put them on so I will probably get rid of them the end of the season and buy replacements next year.

I do need some decent summer dresses but I can’t find any that fit.

OneNewEagle · 17/06/2026 18:14

Oh and I didn’t sell any of mine just gave it away or else it hadn’t left the house.

lindyloo57 · 17/06/2026 18:30

I'm trying to declutter too, I have 3 wardrobes and 3 chests, we are moving soon from a 3 bed to a 2 bed bungalow, I have some things on ebay, 3 bags for charity , I'm retired so don't need lots of clothes but do find it hard to let go, today I am letting go of older shorts and tops that I only wear when gardening, to start wearing my better ones, I'm the one that keep things for best, I must stop this and start wearing them.

Difficulty101 · 17/06/2026 21:06

If you are paring down, look at the colour wheel for helping to put together outfits that coordinate well. Also look at pattern mixing so you can have tops and scarves that really look pulled together.

Well done. So easy to have bursting wardrobes and actually wear less and mooch about in stuff you don't even like that much.

Twattergy · 17/06/2026 21:13

Stuff that doesn't fit just be brutal and put it all into some boxes and leave in a box for a month or so. Youll realise that you dont even think about these items once they are in a box, and you'll want to take them to a charity shop to clear the space. Just fill one or two boxes a month and take to charity shop.

MoreDresses · 17/06/2026 21:20

Thank you all. You've given me a bit of inspiration to actually look at my wardrobes this weekend and start listing things on vinted. I think I'm going to do a definite pile first : it hasn't been worn, I don't particularly like it, it doesn't suit me. Then I'll worry about the next stage later. I think sometimes doing it in one go is far too overwhelming
