What classic, timeless but smart jacket/cardigan to wear with this dress?

What would go well with this dress, I need a skirt or jacket. Im 5'7 size 10.
It is for a smart but outdoor party in mid August. I have some classic flat shoes but am at a loss as to what to wear on top of the dress if it's chilly.
Thank you

@PetulaDark yes! You're right...i do still have a waist, despite age and decay!
Good thought.

@Oneearringlost No Glasto this year. But you could do boho chic and wear a denim jacket! Or a leather jacket! Or a fur jacket ?

@Oneearringlost Oh look, you don’t need a dress!

Anything from here:

But if either of you already has a beaten up old trench coat or Barbour that would be the chic-est thing.

I love that Plümo dress

I HAVE got a very, very old faux leather biker jacket! I don't think I'd go for denim...but I'll have to fish that old jacket out...I haven't thought of that in 15 years, or so...I think its in the attic...I bought it in 1989!

I adore the JL dress and am tempted to buy it myself. 😁

ArabellaWeird · 17/06/2026 20:32

Oh good, someone else said it... not that dress!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 17/06/2026 20:50

@Oneearringlost Jazz it up with a sparkly brooch! As a cover up, it’s fine.

@SeditiousPam Oh Pam, you ARE seditious! I've just bought the JL dress now.
Look what you made me do!

Tell me what to wear on top???

Ps Thank you! I'll think of you every time I wear it. X

That made me laugh ...!!!

WhatToWearMilan · 17/06/2026 22:32

@Oneearringlost did you buy the blue Jolie Moi dress or the white french connection?

I think an oversized, slouchy cashmere jumper to throw over the dress if its chilly as it gets dark would be fab!

Oneearringlost · Yesterday 05:24

@WhatToWearMilan I bought the JL one that SeditiousPam suggested...
Yes, a slouchy cashmere jumper could work; I've got a couple of cashmere jumpers, but they're not particularly slouchy and I don't think i can stretch to a new jumper. I could look on Vinted, I suppose. Nice idea, thank you.

Hmm … There’s nothing wrong with a floral dress in the right context!

Did you not like this?

(Assuming that’s your preferred brand?)

PS - I’m so relieved you aren’t annoyed!

Edited

You’d never get a cardigan or jacket over those sleeves…though I love the pattern.

True! And criminal to cover them up.
Maybe a large scarf, wrap-type thing. I'm going to have to have a look.

Agree with a cropped/ short Kimono jacket.

Please dont buy that dress, awful quality and terrible returns policy. Always check on Trustpilot before buying anything online even if its from a reputable company like Next as they sell any old tat online now.

A cashmere sweater with the JL dress would be fabulous.

There is absolutely no problem putting a cardigan or jacket over that. The sleeves are fitted for most of the arm and you just leave the cuffs showing or as the dress is polyester tuck them in - they won't crease.

I have a cotton dress from Batsheva with similar sleeves.

Glad you bought the JL dress. It is gorgeous. I'd wear it with a blazer if it gets cold but maybe too smart for an apple orchard.Leather jacket or denim would look good.Just tuck the sleeves up!

Yes, i think youre right...not keen on denim but I have got a ( vv old, 1989 ) faux leather biker jacket.
I'm not a blazer fan, I'm afraid.
Thank you, you are all fine-tuning the look i think I'm after. I'm so grateful.

Your outfit is beginning to sound wonderfully romantic and nostalgic, @Oneearringlost. Would your husband remember the faux leather jacket?

Certainly perfect for a celebration in an orchard.

Yes, he would, Pam! We met in 1989 at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. I actually bought it with him in a tiny 2nd shop in Jericho.
He, meanwhile, went into Burtons and bought an atrocious pair of trousers and top.

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I'm so appreciative and starting to look forward to it. X

Oh wow - that really is perfect! That memory will be a talking point at your party.

(I’m walking to Jericho later today … 😀)

The Jericho on the West Bank, or the Jericho in Oxford?!
