How to dye your hair

Oh wise ones of style and beauty. Please could you help
I’ve never dyed my hair before, some how I’ve got to the ripe age of 40 something and never done it, I used to have highlights in my teens but that’s been it. I’ve bought some hair dye from an online company that makes up the dye to your requirements. So please could you lavish me with all your tips and expertise so I don’t fuck it up and look like coco the clown.

thanking you for even reading

Buy your own rubber gloves rather than the useless thin ones that are usually provided with home dye.

Be sure to have something like Vaseline to rub around your hairline and ears to avoid dyeing your skin.

Do not under any circumstances skip the 48 hour patch test. You will have little or no standing in a civil case for damages if you omit this step.

Don’t use your regular towels. Sequester an ancient ragged one that you’ll never want to use for anything else.

Remove all your jewellery before starting.

Do not use it on your eyebrows!

I obviously can’t comment on the suitability of the dye you’ve ordered. If you name it here people may be able to make more specific suggestions based on experience of that product. Otherwise - Google it and watch any YouTube videos related to it. (You may already have done this.)

Thank you so much for replying. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos, and its seems straight forward yet I feel very woreied im going to look awful!!
it’s e salons kit so comes with everything in it.
im so risk averse, yet i realise im being silly as millions do it every day and dont look horrendous.
I do wish they’d have sent a little sample for the patch test instead of having to open the big bottles.

That's the risk everyone takes home dying their hair. Unless your hair is completely grey/half grey/white you should have a good result as you have virgin hair. You should get a great result if you've bought a premium hair dye, good luck, go for it. You got great advice from the previous poster.

Well.

it’s done!

I left it for longer than I should (I remembered my hair always took longer with the highlights).
and it’s not taken. I’m not sure what I did wrong, I can sort of see a tint, but nothing noticeable.

i have found a college about an hour away that has a hair and beauty department so I might try there when this has washed out (it was only semi permanent).

thank you all for the advice though, especially the old towels tip!!!

Interesting …

How different was the dye colour supposed to be to your own hair?

One thing is that you may see more of a difference tomorrow. I now only use a tinting shampoo (from the men’s department!) to blend in grey hair, and it always looks more ‘there’ the day after washing in.

It was quite different. It’s a sort of mahogany colour and mines naturally mousey. Put it this way, it’s so similar. No one in my household has noticed

i did look at the tints and glazes. They definitely seem less aggravation than worrying about trashing the bathroom!

fingers crossed another wash brightens it up a bit.
