Yet women less

OP posts:
Honeyhonay · 14/06/2026 20:32

Probably the same reason overweight women tend to wear dresses more than jeans or trousers.

It does annoy me that men are allowed to wear shorts to the office these days. But if a women did it would be frowned upon. Men have the excuse they are always hot but plenty of women get warm too

Where do you work?

Women can and do wear shorts like this in my office. None of the men wear shorts.

Being a fatty can make you feel the heat more so they’re probably trying to stay cool.

Branleuse · 14/06/2026 20:46

Because they get hot?

Women wear shorts too or skirts, but women are more likely to be judged for what they wear if they are overweight, whereas men are just neutral people

What an awful post:

15 stone isn’t that heavy. I’d say not far off 50% of men are at or over 15 stone, and if you are over 6’ then 15 stone doesn’t look like 15 stone at all.

What are men supposed to wear when it’s hot?

you realise that overweight woman also wear shorts right?

and lastly, and most importantly, who gives a shit and why does it bother you so much?

If you're 15 stone and 6ft 5in you are just about in the healthy weight range otherwise your a fat *, and yes you look fat. Who ate all the pies, who ate all the pies .................

Noshadowsinthedarkness · 14/06/2026 20:50

I don’t think overweight men wear shorts more than regular weight men, I just think you notice more as part of your own issues OP.

Cobrakainerd · 14/06/2026 20:51

Depends on the shorts, tailored, proper size, belt then yes..scruffy jersey baggy shorts under an overhanging gut..yuck.

ThatllBeTheDog · 14/06/2026 20:51

People should wear what they want but to pretend 15 stone isn’t that fat for the vast majority of men is silly.

Women can wear dresses, skirts, lightweight blouses etc

Why should that be ok, but men have to wear long trousers in a heatwave?!

Joolay · 14/06/2026 20:12

Why they like shorts so much
when underweight/regular weight men might not.

as in OP

Is this in code?

SovietSpy · 14/06/2026 21:59

Work in fin tech. Have never seen any women wear shorts to the office in my whole career.

I never said women don’t have other options. I said men can wear shorts to the office these days but women can’t.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 14/06/2026 22:04

Because women are shamed into being uncomfortable.

That sounds really crap (sorry for my glib post earlier as I thought you were being sarcastic), I’d challenge the dress code as it sounds discriminatory. In our office I have never seen a man wear shorts, but I have seen women wearing them. But, our office is only 15% women so possibly the men just dress for the majority and don’t want to break the mould.

Can these women not wear a skirt to the office? Skirts are generally cooler to wear in hot weather anyway.

exhaustedforever · 14/06/2026 22:16

Im a woman, but I pretty much live in shorts all year round, I have some pics of me in wellies and shorts in the snow, I like the comfort factor, I like how they look. Men more than women though as in general we have a lot more options like skirts and the like.
But essentially it boils down to different people like different things, a concept that always seems to confuse some on mumsnet.

cauliflowerforever · 14/06/2026 22:23

Why should anyone regardless of their sex care what other people think ? Just leave people to live their lives !

BigMommasHouse · 14/06/2026 22:41

Betty Swalloks obviously. Would you rather they wore kilts? Would that be more aesthetically appealing?

Beekman · 14/06/2026 23:13

Why do you care, OP?

ArtfullyDistressed · 14/06/2026 23:19

Are you just sitting about pondering clothing philosophies, OP? Do you also exercise your mind on ‘Why does anyone wear flesh-coloured leggings which give the impression of nudity below the waist?’ and ‘Why do some men look good in suits, while others look like badly-wrapped parcels?’

Never been the case anywhere I've worked, and I'm sorry if your workplace is like that-women are more likely to have their legs uncovered (whether in skirts or shorts) anywhere I have been.
Had men complain that women have always been allowed dresses/short skirts, but they are seen as unprofessional unless they wear long trousers.

DierdreDaphne · 14/06/2026 23:34

cuberoot · 14/06/2026 20:16

I think you nailed - it's not about the men, it's about women feeling they can't and being judged more.
Although, I'm not from the UK and according to the standards of my country, as soon as you turn 40 or your BMI is higher than 22 you should cover yourself with a curtain head to toe, mine is 27 and here I feel free to wear whatever I fancy and it's so liberating

I suspect you may be French...?

Edited

But in your workplace presumably that's their decision not to, not the enforcement of an office dress code. What's stopping women in fin tech not wearing skirts, dresses, shorts or culottes?

In mine it's a dress code. Men may not wear shorts.

Are you really saying you work in an office which has a dress code which forbids women to wear shorts but allows men to wear shorts?

Is this some sort of enforced religious modesty rule?

EeewDavid12 · 14/06/2026 23:51

Nothing to do with fat men, but it is funny when you see men wearing shorts, a big coat and hat. They are cold enough to warm up the top half but the legs are out!
