Why cannot I get my hair like they do when I’m in the salon? What witchcraft is going on in there? My hair always smells so so good afterwards too. I need help

There is a hairdresser mason's society where secret elements are mixed into perfume. Only the initiated can use them. Hth.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/06/2026 21:39

Very good quality products. Has your hairdresser never tried to sell you a £40 pot of conditioner?

BashfulClam · 13/06/2026 21:50

The know hope to do a blowdry and unless you have had the same practice it’s really hard.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 14/06/2026 07:21

I’m terrible at blow drying my hair. Maybe that’s the secret.
never been asked to buy any product. But I do use expensive shampoo and conditioner.

I’m convinced it’s the blow dry too, both the fact they do it immediately after washing your hair rather than having it towel wrapped for 20 mins (2 hrs….) while you wander around sorting other stuff out, and the fact they are in a better position to brush it and dry it at the same time and get the root lift right. My arms just don’t stretch in those directions.

TorroFerney · 14/06/2026 12:18

Agree with others, It's the blow dry - otherwise on shampoo adverts they'd just let the model style their own hair as the product is so miraculous!

Iloveeverycat · 14/06/2026 13:14

It's definitely the blow dry. When I do mine it's just a load of frizz. When my DD does it who is a hairdresser it is smooth with no frizz at all. I asked her could I do it myself. She said it would be too hard as you have to smooth all the hair cuticles a certain way.

Highonmyownsupply · 14/06/2026 13:34

I’ve just discovered hair primer after using some at a really posh gym on holiday.

It’s fab and makes styling much easier (along with a revlon hot brush dryer thingy). I’ve bought some from Boots by a brand called Arkive. You spray it on like water before styling. The brand I used in the gym was MD London but I could only find it online. Real game changer. I have quite thick straight hair.

CheesyBeanos · 14/06/2026 13:43

I have evidence it is definitely the blow dry. I take my own shampoo and conditioner to the salon due to a scalp condition and the magic still happens!

boathouserocks · 14/06/2026 13:54

I realized years ago that the magic that makes me look and feel so good after visiting the salon is all about the expert way in which my new cut is blow dried.

I can blow dry my own hair but I'm not standing above my head and I haven't been blow drying many styles of hair every working day for years!

Of course it's going to look good, you notice unless you ask not to have your hair styled using a dryer, you seldom walk out of a salon having just had a cut or a trim and your hair is still flat?

I don't think it's the styling products either, I've noticed that salons have really cut back on using their in-store products to style their customer's hair.

They also haven't been pushing the shelves of products like they used to either.

kab89 · 14/06/2026 13:54

I spoke to a hairdresser about this. I cannot for the life of me blow dry my hair nice and smooth since going grey and the menopause. She told me you have to get the tension right (but didn't elaborate). She said only try to style your hair when it's 90% dry and she advised me to use Argon oil. I find that my best results are after using the Babylis Big Hair, it is nowhere near as nice as when a hairdresser does it, but it's presentable.

ThePalla · 14/06/2026 13:59

Everyone says the dyson hairdryer gives salon result's… I can’t see how it’s possible. I don’t dry my hair for fifteen minutes pulling it away from my head repeatedly while twirling a brush. Agree it’s all about learning to blow dry.

what about lamellar waters… they might help?

Nihongo · 14/06/2026 15:38

I get good results with a hot blow drying brush (I have a Revlon one), using a heat serum and drying my hair in sections.

Yes, it is a bit of a faff, but it’s the closest thing to a salon blowdry I‘ve found.

Highonmyownsupply · 14/06/2026 15:46

And yes, you need to really pull at the hair section and hold the tension until dry, then move on to the next section. When I can be bothered doing that I get a decent result.

Imenti · 14/06/2026 15:46

Always shampoo your hair twice and use professional products. Once to wash off any product and one to properly wash your hair. Told to me by my best friend who is a hairdresser!

rightoguvnor · 14/06/2026 16:02

The closest I’ve ever got to a salon finish is using a good heat protector, leaving hair in turban for 20 mins then drying it in sections using a Revlon big hair. Totally converted me away from traditional hairdryers.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 14/06/2026 16:22

So I’ve washed my hair twice. But in a serum, best defense spray. I’ve then let it air dry but still a bit damp. Used my shark hairdryer with the oval brush to dry it. It’s very silky smooth. But I dried it in small sections. So maybe the blow dry is the answer. Definitely not as good as how my hairdresser does it, but not a bad effort. Seems to be a lot of things needed to get it looking that good. Sigh.

i have shark too @billandtedsexcellentadventure but it doesn’t do the trick as a proper blow dry with brush etc

so it’s definitely the blow dry and not the actual products but … you need a very good a very specific brush

i ve tried hundreds but this is the absolute best for me :
https://amzn.eu/d/05ezQIbg

also they use a very strong proper turbo drier !

use brush like this, do it in small sections repeating at least 30 times and your hair will
be better than salons !

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 14/06/2026 16:34

Oh that brush is unavailable! But yes I see where you’re coming from. I have the attachment on the shark the same as that brush

OP posts:
BrentfordForever · 14/06/2026 16:38

Yes I got the link from past orders on Amazon so not available anymore as got it ages ago

But same brand has also here https://amzn.eu/d/0dKpN3zB

it looks the same as shark but honestly it isn’t … shark hair gets frizzy after a while

just worth looking into x
