Opinions on two spring wedding guest dresses for an hourglass shape

Could you give me your opinions on these two dresses for a spring wedding. I know their colour scheme is champagne/brown, not that guests have to match.

im currently a small size 14. But I’ve just lost 5 stones and will hopefully have lost another stone by the wedding. The left hand dress is only available in a 22, the right hand one is available in a 14 or 12. I hope I will be a 12 by then. Both dresses are in the sale with a good amount off. Hourglass figure, can often look matronly/hippy in dresses that have a waistband or tied waist. Other suggestions welcome. I suit reds, yellows, browns and greens. I think I like the left side more.

I do like the cream & yellow dress posted by @OneNewEagle . This Ghost one is a similar shape - so I'm assuming you won't like the shape - but I think it's also rather pretty.

Edited

I like that dress.

The fabric of this is very wedding-guest-appropriate, OP, & it's a very nice shade of red. Also well reduced too!

That’s a really nice dress as well. I’m surprised I’ve not seen that one myself for me to consider as some fatface dresses actually fit me. A very good price as well as you can dress it up or down.

Have you tried them on? If you are self-conscious about your hips the pleats may accentuate them.

I irrationally dislike high-low hems but I think that’s a me thing.

OP - I get that you're not interested in fashion, just want to look nice in colours that you suit & in a style of dress that you like - but I think you can do much better!

I do think it's probably a bit unwise to look so early, as you don't know quite what size or shape you'll be in almost a year's time. The first two dresses you posted look quite cheap to me. Even with budget restrictions, there will be nicer, better quality dresses in higher-quality fabrics available to you.

You seem to like what I'd call a classic tea-dress shape? Have a look at the outlet section on the Ghost website? These ones are all in the sale. They include a few fine cord/velvet ones - which might well be more appropriate for a British wedding in early March!!! Even some of their full-price dresses come in at under £100.

None of these is what I'd call cutting-edge fashion. They're quite safe choices - but they'll be better cut & quality than the ones you posted. And they're all really well-reduced.

If the wedding happens to be on a warm day next March, then you can wear these with kitten heels & a light jacket. If it's chilly (more likely!) then I would probably wear knee-high kitten-heeled boots & a short fake fur jacket or velvet blazer.

Thanks, I like the red and the green ones.

This Ghost one is full price at £99. It's a pretty fresh colour without being overly spring-like, as it could be worn with boots & a smart coat if it's bad weather on the day of the wedding.

Like that one too, but concerned my big boobs might make it look completely different on me!

I do like this one too. It might accent my shape without being too form fitting.

I wasn’t suggesting yellow because it’s in fashion. I suggested it as it was one of the colours the OP suits. Plus it’s a spring wedding and I always think yellow looks nice at spring weddings and Easter time christenings. Also I had noticed the yellow dresses just the day before.

I absolutely love yellow. I wear it all the time. I probably get more comments about how something really suits me when it’s yellow. I have chestnut brown hair, hazel eyes and skin that tans easily, so I usually have a warm skin tone (although perhaps not so much in early March!).

Early March will probably be winter, in terms of weather and temperature.

Tiredmumno1 · Yesterday 10:03

Have you had a look at Joe Browns?

TheSnorax · Yesterday 10:21

Honestly OP, having lost a very large amount of weight in the last two years I would strongly advise you not to make this purchase now if you are not yet at your goal weight. Nine months is a long time and you don't know how your shape will settle and change once you have reached your goal weight and started maintaining. I realise you want to save some money on the prices now but you're very likely to end up with something that isn't quite right.

I know, it’s a gamble! Although the way it’s been sooo slow for the last stone, I might only just have shifted the final stone by March! It’s just the sales are so tempting!

It’s quite likely. We live in an area where we often see snow around March. I often think it’s the worst winter month. The wedding is 50 miles further south, usually much milder weather, but still just south of Manchester…

Well, you won't know until you try it on! But, re-reading your original post - are you planning to try them on & buy in a 14 or a 12? As the first will (you hope) no longer fit at the time of the wedding - & the second won't fit you now??!!

Or are you planning to order both sizes, & if the 14 looks fine you'll take a gamble & keep the 12 ...?!! All seems quite complicated when you could just buy nearer the time! I think if I bought a wedding guest dress nearly a year in advance I might well have changed my mind about it by then too!!!

Ah, but you & @OneNewEagle wear yellow because you like it & feel good in it. Not because it's so "this year"??!

I don't think either of you are planning on ditching any pale yellow in your wardrobe on the 1st of January 2027, are you ...?!!!! (Because it's still fashionable to wear on the 31st December 2026, but will look terribly dated the following day ...!!! 😁)

Second week in March is still Winter, sometimes can be very cold. I have been to a few weddings round this time and people are still wearing dresses in more heavy fabrics, than light summer dresses. Is it a church wedding etc?

I’ve still got size 16 dresses that I bought for weddings 10 years ago that I am considering!😁. If I tried on a 14 and it felt roomy I’d probably get it in the 12 and pray! If it’s in the sale it’s not the end of the world if I really have lost a lot more.

I just thought I’d look now while there are things on sale. If I look after Xmas it’s likely to be Xmas tat on sale and full price early summer season stuff.

No it’s a wedding where everything happens in the same venue. Hopefully will be warm. But I get what you mean. I would usually add a pashmina or wrap for outside.

You're probably not going to be bare-legged though? Or are you ...?

If it's still wintery, I'd find it much easier to wear a dress in a rich/saturated/dark-enough tone that I could wear with lacy tights & heels. I hate "nylons" & would never wear them - nor would I do bare legs on a cold March day, even if I was inside for most of it!

I have clothes that are twenty years old. probably weren’t in fashion even then. But I buy things that I like, plus fit me as I find it hard for things to fit.

Oh, me too (I would never consider not wearing emerald green or crimson, a couple of my favourite colours for clothing, just because they weren't "in fashion" this year.)

I was attempting to joke about a PP saying that yellow was so very 2026 that it would be out of fashion by the time of the wedding!

I’m amazed my suggestion of yellow for a spring wedding or christening was even in fashion 🤣 (I have fond memories of some christenings of old where guests wore a lot of yellow)

I always picture you as willowy and looking amazing. If I attended a wedding and you were there you would be the one I would wish I looked like. You have such good advice for everyone.

That's very kind! I used to be willowy ... my trunk has thickened somewhat these days!!
