Graduation dress ideas for daughter who likes Disturbia style clothes

My daughter's graduation is fast approaching and we're trying to find a suitable dress.

Most of her clothes come from Disturbia or charity shops. She lives in her Dr Martens. And her hair is likely to be very red/purple on the day.

I support her wearing her style for graduation. But we've looked at Disturbia and most dresses are very low cut.

Criteria is not strappy, not low cut, not above the knee and not body con style. Budget around £100

Has anyone got any alternative suggestions? Thanks

How about this from All Saints?

It does need the belt I think as they have styled it - but lots of waist belts would work, or even a ribbon like the Disturbia one she likes.

Just looked at the Disturbia website-is something like this too low?

Will she be wearing robes?

There def seem to be things on the website that might be a compromise but acceptable?

edited to add no reason why she shouldn't wear her doc martens!!

Edited

I know this kind of cut doesn't look low on the model but on my short busty frame that chest area would be all boob and cleavage.

I get the impression the OP’s DD has the opposite problem- very small bust so this kind of tea dress style, including the one she likes, won’t fit on the boobs.

What about a shirt/blouse like this one from Little Lies? Could be worn buttoned further up for the graduation and could be worn over camis or tshirts in future. I wore shirts with a skirt to both of mine. This could be worn loose over trousers with chunky boots or DMS or with a skirt.

I only briefly scrolled through the home page but most of the plain black dresses on there looked suitable for graduation. The best one i saw was a hankerchief hem midi dress. I wouldn't have thought sleeves and neckline make much difference as she will be wearing a gown and hood.

Or something like this? It's in a couple of different colours:

The criteria seems very strict. I’ve worked organising graduations at quite a few UK universities and have found that most people wear what’s comfortable for them. She’ll have her gown over her clothes anyway for the duration of her actual ceremony and when her ceremony is finished and she’s off celebrating it’s important that she loves what she’s wearing. I honestly wouldn’t get too hung up with the ‘requirements’.

The criteria is from my daughter.
She knows what she likes but is struggling to find it

Atm the dresses on Violent Delights seem to be winning.

She says she wants a dress rather than skirt & top.

It's useful to have a button or other fastening at the front/top , to hang the gown off.

Maximise your Assets bra from Primark. Speaking as a very flat chested woman! That dress is lovely

There are lots on Vinted as well, £30-£70 :)

I have/had similar style to your daughter and this is the style dress I went with 14 years ago. That said it was abroad and was from a small boutique and only one/hand tailored but may give you ideas. I still have it and wore it for a photoshoot and event in my 30s. It is low cut sort off and the back has straps as it is halter neck but it gets a ton of compliments. It is also easy to pair with lace body suit/crop too which gives it that disturbia style. i wore it with platform heels with laces and have also worn it with platform boots.. have a look on vinted/ebay for something unique

p.s - tried to post a pic but doesn’t seem to work..

@NellyTheCake I think that dress is really good but does she need to wear a gown and a hood? How will the hood fix? Or could it fix to the gown? Others might know. Pop a bit of lace in the deep V.

OneNewEagle · 09/06/2026 18:53

You need to be able to fit the gown at the top.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/06/2026 19:43

The one she chose is really lovely, agree with pp just get a piece of lace or chiffon fabric in the same colour and fill in the neckline a bit.

Usually fastened with Velcro these days so less of an issue

Hood fastens directly to the gown with Velcro so doesn’t affect what’s underneath
