Prom dresses

Any advice please? Year 6 prom so kids are aged 10/11. My DD loves pink and frilly, most girls wearing smart casual even though the event is called “prom” so I’m panicking now as I don’t know what this means! Could you please help me pick out a few dresses for her pls I’m so hopeless at shopping or style which I have zero sense of style.

I think most girls are wearing summer dresses , that’s what the mums are telling me, I’ve been caught out before by listening to the chatter on the group chat as they had a disco just before half term and chat on the group WhatsApp was “ oh we just putting on jeans and a shirt” so I did the same and DD came home upset as most of the girls were wearing disco type outfits like sequin skirts etc.

What does she want to wear? Next has lots of options if you filter by size, pink if that’s her preference then price you are willing to pay. Some may rewear things like bridesmaids dresses of course

@hahabahbag I’ve asked her and and we looked online and she keeps going for the really prom type ones! But will she look silly if all the other girls are wearing summer dresses? I don’t know the mums very well as she started in year 5 so I PM’d one mum and she said her daughter will wear a “nice dress” no idea what that means

Sorry I think I should add I am autistic so this is very difficult for me

Can she ask her friends what they are wearing?

a nice dress would be a monsoon dress not prom dress

there will be a mix but at my child’s school it was more casual - if I had the information you had I’d go for something nice she could wear again

@Lewiscapaldiscat that’s a good point. I’ll ask her to ask tomorrow. Yes to that she can wear again.

I would go for something simple but nice like this. I always feel it is better to go underdressed than overdressed! There are always one or two girls who dress in more ‘sexy’ dresses or ‘ballroom’ options but in my experience that was the minority.

This kind of thing with trainers and a nice denim jacket was more the look when my kids were this age.

i just had a look back over my daughters year 6 prom (she is year 9 now). Most of the girls wore long dresses (similar to what you get in Monsoon - but not Monsoon prices!!). A few had in ball gown type dresses, but didn’t look out of place as everyone had made the effort to dress up, but age appropriate. Some of the girls had their hair done (curled).

i bought my DD a dress from shein (risky, as you can’t guarantee the quality). DD wanted a full ball gown, but when the dress arrived, it was much shorter than in the pictures (3/4 length rather than full length).

hope your DD has a lovely time.

I think a formal dress is probably too much for a Y6 prom (although there will doubtless be one or two wearing them). I agree to ask the other girls what they are wearing - this will be a big topic! But don't feel obliged to be sucked in.

A "nice dress" basically means something that your daughter might wear if you were going for a meal out in a nice restaurant (for example) - it's a cut above a dress she'd just wear for every day, but not something ultra smart.

For my DD’s year 6 prom, most of the girls wore nice party dresses rather than formal prom dresses. I don’t recall seeing many wearing long dresses…they were mostly shorter style. As PPs have said, places like Monsoon, Next and possibly Shein are good starting points. My DD wore a ditsy halter neck jumpsuit with a cape…all of £12 from New Look and she looked amazing in it!

I am def not one to preach about ethics and people can order from Shein of course. But I think there was something relatively recently
about their clothes containing hazardous chemicals, so you may want to think twice before putting your child in them. Maybe have a read before ordering.

The other place to look is Vinted. There are always lots of people selling "worn once" or even "never worn at all" lovely dresses.

Actually I have the dress my daughter wore at her Year 6 prom up on sale :)
