Can you get a pedicure if you've got fungal toenails?

If someone turns up for a pedicure and they've got nasty yellow fungal toenails, will they be shown the door?

Asking for a close friend.

you can always paint your nails yourself at home afterwards or maybe they would do it for you

they won't
Podiatrist is a specialised medical health care professional

A fabulous podiatrist always used to paint my granny’s nails for her, after she’d done the medical stuff.

My granny was resistant to being an ‘old lady’ and always keen on a bit of glamour well into her 80s. So making something seem like a beauty treatment more than a medical appointment was very important to her.

Probably need a chiropodist - treatment. My son had a fungal nail infection from 2yrs. One nail he banged into something wearing sandals then went into the sea in Spain and it grew back normal. The others he still has, and he’s in his early 30’s. But he has never been consistent with treatment.

I had a toenail infection, it took over 6 months to grow out with medication prescribed by GP. My salon still did my pedicures BECAUSE they are so fastidiously clean.
They never use the same nail files/foot files on the same client (each client has a folder that contains the tools used for their treatments) , the foot soak sink is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between clients (I see her do this), anything that is used by more than one client is soaked in disinfectant and cleaned between uses (cuticle clippers).
When it eventually grew out, she threw away all the tools from my file and replaced with new ones to prevent my old files reinfecting me.
She wears gloves while’s doing the treatment.
I’m not sure that many salons are this clean though.

This ^ The foot soak water is disinfected like the swimming baths are. (Nobody pees in the swimming baths do they?) All the tools they use are steralised after every use they don't use the same tools on two clients. I am told this by a friend OP.

Not always possible. The pills can have side effects and don't work for everyone, same as the gels, and laser. Podiatrist said nearly ten percent of people will have one which doesn't heal. Probably won't be as many in the future, as people might get them treated earlier/people are more likely to not get them in the first place.
OP, you can get a medical manicure at a chiropodist. They can also do a type of reconstruction, as in they remove a lot of your nail, and put on this gel that they harden, and it lasts maybe a couple of months

Yes the pills have side effects and our GP refused to give them to my DW for years because of all the other pills she has and I guess because of complications due to menopause as well. I have been told that the best way to treat a fungal infection is to get your toenails out in the sun and the ultra violet light will kill the nasties

I got rid of my fungal nail using vicks vapo rub! I did try the OTC varnish before but that did nothing for me.
my friend took tablets but she had to go for blood tests regularly as it can affect your liver…
anyway, i had a pedicure 2 weeks ago and we were chatting about this actually. She said people come here with all sorts of issues on their feet and it can be gross. For fungus she sends them to the chiropodist across the road. Not sure about varnish though
good lick to your friend

I have been known to wash clean and rub cream in ( lots of my colleagues wouldn't). You wouldn't want me painting your nails though , my skills there are nil😉

It’s grim to suggest as you’re transferring onto the brush that’s used on others. Go to a podiatrist for proper treatment and paint your own nails. I can recommend the medical pedicure and treatments from Margaret Dabbs

Happyrascalsmummy · 06/06/2026 19:27

I have really thick discoloured big toe nails on both feet which I thought was fungal however multiple podiatrist have confirmed that it isn't. I have wild pedique and it makes an amazing difference. It is applied by a podiatrist and is suitable even if it is fungal nail infection causing the issue. It's makes the nail look totally normal once painted over. I pay around £70 to have both big toes done but it is absolutely worth it, I will happily wear sandals which I wouldn't dream of without it and it lasts for ages.

MrsHeathcliff26 · 06/06/2026 19:28

My podiatrist offers a medi pedi and will paint your nails if you byo your own polish. That’s what I do when I have fungal issues from spin classes and my feet and socks get super sweaty.

@Greenteaandbiscuits did you need a blood test before and after?

i have a needle phobia and that’s what’s putting me off.
