How do you style accessories like this?

I have a lot of clothes saved for an upcoming holiday, and one thing I really want to embrace is accessories. But I have no idea how to style them! I never really wear hats but recognise in southern Europe in the summer one will be a necessity, so how do I make them look effortless and cool rather than a bit silly?

Unless trekking or something the no ties on the hat. Wide brim will go with most things, casual or smarter. The scarf around neck/shoulders, emergency head cover if required to visit somewhere religious.
Best thing is to find foldable/rollable if you are travelling with them.

How do you get the wide hat to stay on your head if it’s not tied? I really don’t have the head for hats but need one for the summer

I agree with no ties under the hat unless it’s hiking gear or meant for a toddler. A straw hat goes with everything, a large one looks better (imo) with a dress or a skirt, than with shorts although I would probably wear one with very short shorts and a slightly oversized shirt to break the y2k street style vibe.

I would wear scarves on my head, bag or around my waist in summer as my neck is covered in a) sunscreen, b) sweat. It’s difficult to look relaxed and cool if you have to worry about sunscreen transfer onto silk.

Needs to be the right size so it stays put. It’s not the most comfortable accessory imo, I prefer a straw bucket hat, 1930s style.

I hate a bucket hat! I have no idea where to start 😂

I’ve got this from River Island, it went with everything, I think the key is to put it on and forget about it, we tend to feel self conscious about wearing hats but I love them!

I understand. A hat with a large brim fits someone tall, so I don’t have that problem. I would start with measuring the circumference of my head and go from there.

The larger the hat the more important is to get the right size, you don’t want “one size fits all” that falls over your eyes, moves around and forces you to keep your head forward because it constantly brushes against the back of your neck. It would be the opposite of effortless.

Tuck the ties underneath the hat and don’t bother with the scarf. Scarves like that really only work in spring or autumn when it’s not hot and humid. Wear gold hoops and maybe a bracelet stack but otherwise that’s all the styling you need. Less is more.

Most hats have an adjustable band inside which you can tighten or loosen so it fits.

Divebar2021 · 03/06/2026 09:31

I love a Panama hat and it fits my style but my god the travel with it is boring because you have to wear it on the plane and make sure it doesn’t get crushed in the overhead bins. I suppose if it’s packable then that’s a bit different. ( I just don’t want to spend a lot of money on one ). I wouldn’t wear a chin strap in any style though.

CortieTat · 03/06/2026 10:00

My approach is to either wear a smaller hat (I have a straw bucket hat and a more floppy, “girly” version of a linen newsboy cap for summer) in my size or adjustable or a more expensive and properly sized larger hat. Some of my hats are from vinted so budget wasn’t really an issue at all.

The problem with a larger hat is that it has to fit really well to look effortless, the key to effortless and cool looks is that you don’t have to think about adjusting your clothes, being mindful about your posture or worry that something falls off.

I have three Summer hats. The wide brimmed one has a neck strap, but I tuck it up until the Mistral blows, and takes me and the hat with it! In other words, strap used in emergencies only. It's Aussie bush style and is great, foldable throwable and bounces back to life.

The next one is a khaki lightweight bucket hat that folds into its own little pocket. Great for days out to throw in the handbag or whatever. I attached a band of embroidered daisies all around the rim (not the brim), and it looks so nice, well I would say that wouldn't I ha ha.

Last one is the same as the one posted above from River Island, but it's a cream colour.

Of the three I love the little bucket hat the best. It's just so portable and effective. The others I mix around when abroad mostly.

Scarves I use for cover up, and tie knots in them to make cardi like wraps, see Insta for inspo. Works great. Of course you could tie the scarf over the hat and around your neck like Audrey Hepburn (I think it was her) instead of using a neck cord. Very retro 50s style on the Italian Riviera.

I have a hat with ties but I snipped them off as didn't need them. I have a big head though. Often men's hats come in different sizes so you can find one to better fit you.

I have a head that is not suited to hats at all

I’m thinking a lot of flowy linen dresses, cotton dresses, nice wide trousers and shirts etc. so that’s why I was thinking a big floppy hat. I don’t think a baseball cap would work with that.

I have exactly this hat: https://cthericson.se/en/collections/damhattar/products/regina-linen-natural and it comes in proper hat sizes. If I wore a large, floppy hat with oversized shirts and flowing dresses I would look like a mushroom even though I’m size 6, because I’m also short!

Not sure how feasible is to order from CTH Ericson for you but this style in general is very flattering for most faces because it nicely accentuates cheek bones and the risk of looking like a tired mushroom is minimal.
