Critique my veneer please (dentists welcome)

I recently got a veneer on a tooth that had become stained internally by an amalgam filling. First I had the amalgam replaced with white filling but the tooth was still grey so a veneer was the next resort.

Photos are before, during (when the temporary veneer fell off) and after. I don’t like the end result. I assumed I’d end up with a tooth the same shape and length as the original but of a colour that matches the rest of my teeth. But for some reason the veneer is shorter, weirdly square, sticks out and has a groove running vertically down it which casts a shadow and makes the tooth look darker. The veneer also still shows the grey of the underlying tooth in natural light. This wasn’t cheap for me at £700 plus the £250 to replace the amalgam filling first (pointlessly as it turned out).

I’ve been back and explained this to my dentist and I have another appointment where I’ll find out what the lab says they can do, and if I decide to get it redone the veneer will be drilled off and I might have to lose some more tooth surface. She says the groove is the lab trying to make the tooth look natural but my original tooth had no groove. She didn’t say why it’s so short.

I was shown the veneer before it was cemented on but I felt under pressure, was lying flat, it was under a bright light and I didn’t see the groove or greying or appreciate how short it looks. It makes the tooth next to it appear fang-like.

I feel that my dentist doesn’t really see the problem and she seems inconvenienced that the veneer will need to be drilled off and she will have to do impressions etc all over again. I’d love to hear other people’s opinions.

That’s a really good result - it looks so natural! 🤩

hugasaurus · 01/06/2026 10:51

I think it looks great, very natural and looks just like the rest of your normal teeth.

MrsLFii · 01/06/2026 10:52

If the second picture is the after, it looks spot on imo. Very natural. Leave as is I think!

Shudacudawuda · 01/06/2026 10:53

I think that looks like a really good professional result, so natural and matches your other teeth, you'd never notice it! Personally I'd leave it alone now.

Thesummer · 01/06/2026 10:54

I think it looks amazing and natural. It's slightly shorter than your 'before' but I think it's only something you would notice. You could ask the dentist to slightly round off the canine tooth (the long sharp one next to it) to make it less 'fanglike' if it really bothers you but I don't think it's necessary, also you'd need to have the same done to the canine on the other side.

Shufflebumnessie · 01/06/2026 10:54

The fact it took me a while to figure out exactly which tooth was the veneer might help you feel more confident about it. I think it's only natural when something about us changes, we fixate on it and manage to convince ourselves it looks different/out if place etc.
However, if it helps at all, I think it looks fab. Very natural & in keeping with your other teeth. Absolutely nothing about it makes it stand out.
Having had a lot if orthodontist work done, I'd advise giving it a good couple of months (possibly, even longer if you can) before making any decisions.
Not quite the same, but I recently had a lot more blonde than normal put through my hair and it took about 3 weeks before I finally started getting used to it. I felt like my hair was a neon beacon just because it was so new to me & I was seriously looking at shamppo etc to tone it down. When I mentioned it to other people absolutely no one else thought it was as bright or noticeable as I did. It just took time to adapt to.

ursuslemonade · 01/06/2026 10:55

Op I would be happy with this. Leave it!

hellomylov3 · 01/06/2026 10:56

Looks great, it might just take a while for you to get used to it!

I think it looks great. I would be pleased with that.

Lampzade · 01/06/2026 11:28

Agree with others, it looks very natural. I would not have known which tooth was the veneer tbh .
The dentist did a great job

BauhausOfEliott · 01/06/2026 11:36

I don't understand what the problem is. It looks completely natural. If I hadn't seen the before/during photos, I wouldn't have been able to say which tooth had a veneer on it. It looks much better now than it did before.

allthegoldicouldeat · 01/06/2026 13:09

I think it’s a good result.
And I speak as someone who is nearing the end of a long course of cosmetic dental treatment, so I know that you really want people to be honest.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 01/06/2026 13:13

It looks really natural OP, I struggled to work out which tooth it was.

I think that's a great result tbh. How does it compare to the same tooth on the other side of your mouth? As long as it looks even from the front I wouldn't be worried.

minipie · 01/06/2026 13:59

I agree with PP, how does it compare to the matching tooth on the other side? If they are very different then that might cause me to be unhappy. On its own though it looks really good.

I can just about see the groove you mean, it doesn’t make it look greyer IMO. Colour looks perfect.

ItsNotMeEither · 01/06/2026 14:03

I think it looks great. You’re just getting used to it.

We are all our own harshest critics and often see flaws that others don’t notice at all.

OceanSafari · 01/06/2026 14:05

I was confused by order of pics, but if white one is final result I think it looks good!

muddyford · 01/06/2026 14:21

I thought the bottom right picture was the final one.

Seagroves · 01/06/2026 14:47

I think it looks good too - very natural with the groove (my molars have them).

Krevlornswath · 01/06/2026 15:25

I think the result is very satisfactory OP, very natural. From the images it's difficult to see any issue with the length of the tooth, maybe this would be more apparent with a shot of the full smile but it really does look (more than!) fine.

I would be cautious of having additional work done or any more of the original tooth removed when this might weaken it structurally and cause issues later, especially where there is a previous filling.

I had some composite bonding work done on some of my teeth last year and I do think we scrutinise the changes much more than we ever did our natural teeth. I also found that having some more perfectly finished teeth so to speak made me notice small irregularities in the ones next to them that I hadn't before but objectively my smile is significantly improved and I think the dentists choices to include small irregularities actually looks much better than it would if they hadn't as the teeth blend with the rest of the smile. Only people I know well even noticed I'd had the work done and even then they struggled to put their finger on what it was that had changed, they were just commenting that my teeth looked nice.
