What do you do with a hat at a wedding?

Going to a posh wedding next month.

It’s just occurred to me that I don’t know what I’m meant to do with my hat throughout the day.
(Yes, hats have been requested, I’m happy about that and have one ready.)

Apart from getting from my hotel to the venue, all dolled up (yikes!), do I also take it off when we sit down for the meal? Just fling it on the ground, somewhere?

(Disclaimer - currently focusing on daft things to avoid doing some thinking work.)

I was told you keep your hat on until the mother of the bride (or groom if MOB isn’t wearing a hat) takes hers off. It might be before the meal or after speeches. Either put it on your lap (if at the table by then) or if before the meal, ask the venue if there’s a clock room to store them in.

put it on a table

UncannyToad · 31/05/2026 10:36

Oh gawd, I forgot about speeches! It’s been decades since I went to a wedding.
Ok, so watch the mums, thank you @FancyBiscuitsLevel

@Joolay Small tables, big hat. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Don’t put it on the table if meal /drinks/speeches are still going. Only if everything’s been cleared. On your lap (not the floor, it’ll get stepped on my waiting staff), or if before the meal, ask the venue if there’s somewhere to store it. They will have dealt with this before. If it’s a marquee type affair, might be harder but ask someone in the family if there’s a place to put them. If they’ve asked for hats, they will have established a place for them to go.

I loathe hats as if I take one off, my hair is then flat and static. They need to be on all day or not a thing.

Divebar2021 · 31/05/2026 10:51

You can’t sit at the reception and eat a meal in a hat unless it’s a tiny thing.

RaininSummer · 31/05/2026 10:59

True. So I think hats are daft at a wedding.

Yeah, I’ll probably look a mess for a while until I can foof my hair up a bit, but I doubt anyone will care.

It’s a marquee, but somewhere used to weddings, so fingers crossed there’s at least a hat stand!

In my experience places that host weddings usually have an area or hooks to store hats

Defiantly41 · 31/05/2026 14:36

If you’re having a blow dry on the day (highly recommended), tell the stylist you will be wearing a hat first. They usually do my hair a bit too “bouffy” and then when it’s been squashed a bit by the hat, it’s perfect! Otherwise I start with nice sleek blow dry that is flat and lifeless when the hat comes off.

Under the chair, hang it on the chair? Unusual to request hats Thought they were a thing of the past at weddings now.

HarryPotterandtheClimateofFear · 31/05/2026 16:05

Last ‘hat’ wedding I went to they had a load of clothespeg type things only nicer hung on one side of the marquee for hat storage. So practical and looked fab.
