What would you do with my worn vintage engagement ring?

Dh gave me this ring when we got engaged in 1997. It was his great aunt's and dates at least from the 20s. I have worn it most of the time and the little pearls have been very worn. I have replaced one once already. The ring part, white gold, is also very thin and worn.
I have talked to a couple of jewellers and been given some ideas. All prices in Australian dollars, currently.53 sterling.

  1. Remake the entire ring in platinum, keeping the diamond and getting new pearls. ($2500).
  1. Repair the ring, with new pearls ($1000)
  1. Ditch the pearls and remake the ring as a solitaire. This would make it easier to wear every day. The diamond is old cut, about .5 carat. ($800).

Would really appreciate any thoughts or insights. DH is agnostic.

The last one. Make the pearls into earrings with the change.

I like the idea of keep the setting as a pendant and buying a new ring for daily wear. It seems such a shame to break it up. It's such a unique piece.

I wouldn't turn it into a diamond solitaire. They are so popular and that ring is much more unique. I would have it repaired and maybe swap out the pearls for something else. Would opals be more hard wearing?

I agree. Diamond solitaire is boring and generic. It's a lovely ring. I would repair the ring, with new pearls ($1000) and maybe keep it as a special, not every day ring.

I didn't want and don't have a wedding ring or an engagement ring and change rings regularly. I have a pearl and emerald ring and have had to replace the pearls.

Opals are not recommended for daily wear either. Around 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale. Therefore prone to cracks and scratching. Diamonds are 10, rubies and sapphires are 9. The pearls really cannot be used in an everyday ring, so it can be repaired and kept for special outings. Or just get a new ring and put all the money into that? Repair and a new ring is quite expensive.
