Wedding is black tie, at noon but in a relaxed venue. Heels are not recommended.
Too casual? Too black? Despite that I really like it

Lots of weddings have black tie now. It's become quite fashionable. I think it was an American style and then people here have copied it.

Not just American. Many cultures have black tie as standard for weddings. It was Britain that was the exception with its casual summer dresses for weddings.

Very formal British weddings would have, and some still do, have morning wear. Black tie is evening wear.

Too casual but why are they having evening dress at lunch time?

Dinner suits are, by definition, for wearing at dinner.

Black tie at noon?! 🤨 The definition of black tie is after dusk/6pm. Do they mean morning dress/lounge suits? Wearing a dinner jacket at noon is a whole load of wrong and gives me the ick. Wear whatever you want, I think the dress is fine. If the person writing the invitation has put an objectively incorrect dress code on the invitation I doubt they will care or enforce it.

They probably do mean black tie. Most people when you hear black tie will think of the type of jackets and dresses that are usually worn. I think they’d think about the clothes rather than the time.

The dress is to casual for a black tie dress code

Yes it’s a beach dress

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 25/05/2026 09:13

@PurBal Black tie is usual now. It’s fairly unusual at noon but no one gets married at 6 pm! My DDs wedding is black tie at 2 pm but it’s a winter wedding in a very beautiful stately home setting. So no one thinks it odd.

Having said that, a summer outdoor wedding is difficult if black tie. It does mean tux and evening wear or velvet jacket for men.

I think it is too casual @CatCatting. When is the wedding? Velvet would be a bit daft in August. Something that’s a lighter fabric and less casual would be better. What is your alternative dress?

Well it’s just nowhere near close to a black tie dress is it? I’d wear that to Tesco on a hot day or the school run.

Pendapala · 25/05/2026 09:40

@CatCatting I wonder if you are in the States? I’ve been to a daytime black tie wedding in Georgia. It was really lovely.

In the UK morning suits are much more usual for daytime and summer weddings. The black tie weddings I’ve been to have been in winter (and only in London, usually in hotels and often the non religious celebration of a Jewish wedding.) I suppose there’s no reason not to do that in summer but I pity the men in bow ties in the heat!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 25/05/2026 10:30

@Pendapala I can assure you a morning suit in heat it awful too! A tie is required and a waistcoat! Ok for a cool church but when it’s 30 degrees it’s horrible - as we see at Royal Ascot!

Yeah I agree, it’s a casual everyday summer dress.

What about this instead? Similar silhouette but formal: I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?
