What to wear on ‘evenings in’ on a family villa holiday?

We have a one-week holiday planned with our adult kids and their other halves in Greece, late June, and I’m getting my wardrobe/ packaging thought out.

Daytimes are obviously straightforward. I’ve got plenty of summer dresses to wear in the evenings if we’re going out to a restaurant.

I’m just wondering what to wear for the evenings when we stay at the villa and bbq. I’ll obviously shower and wash/dry my hair but I can’t think I’m going to want to put on make up, a strapless bra and a sundress. But shortie PJs will a bit TOO casual!

What to wear? What does everyone else do?

I’d wear a casual summer dress. Something easy to wear with straps, or short sleeves.

To eat dinner at your rental house with your own family? Anything except pyjamas.

I just wear a beach dress with a crop bra top underneath. Or wide leg trousers with a t shirt.

This is where those matching linen or cotton sets of shorts with elastic waist and boxy slightly oversized shirt come in, usually in a print. Super comfortable but more put together than your pjs

I am staggered that a functioning adult needs to ask what to wear in a holiday home with her family. How on earth do you cope with more important things in life?!?

I think this is the kind of person for whom there are specific ‘holiday clothes’, so the idea of just wearing what you’d wear at home in a hot evening is a weird idea.

I’d be v casual. Shorts, vests, loose dresses.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 25/05/2026 14:35

Shorts and a tee shirt or linen shirt and jeans/shorts or linen trousers and a vest top.

Pretty much anything I’m wearing in the evenings at home at the moment…

How rude! I assume OP can dress her self but was interested to hear people's suggestions.
Lots of interesting options have been provided that would help OP and also someone like me who was silently reading and enjoying the thread.

Sounds to me like there is a competitive dressing thing going on probably with a SIL or MIL or something. Otherwise why would anyone need to ask this question. It's hot, it's abroad, it's amongst family, wear what you'd wear at home today. So what are you wearing for dinner tonight in nearly 30d heat, there's your answer!

Waitingfordoggo · 25/05/2026 14:53

I’d probably just wear my kaftan (which is what I wear by the pool or on the beach). I also have several pairs of those giant wafty trousers you get in Spanish markets. I’d probably wear those around the villa with a vest or T shirt.

holiday dressing

Out - floaty dress.

At villa - loose fitting shorts and vest top.

Beach - cover up or shorts over swimming costume.

That’s it. Whoever’s with us, wherever we are, whatever time of day.

@Nogimachi I think some of us (I definitely do!) have option paralysis. It’s just internet chit chat, no harm done, don’t criticise, just don’t comment if you don’t get it, you were mean.

I'd have to get vaguely ready - probably leggings and a loose shirt

Hair would be blow-dried and a bit of make up on
