Birkenstocks for walking a lot?

coneyislandoldspot · 24/05/2026 11:06

I’m off on a hot holiday this summer but I’ll be walking a lot. 20,000 steps a day.

Are birkenstocks any good for walking around in all day? I want to be going to the beach, dipping in and out of the sea in the afternoons, but also exploring and walking around a lot.

I can’t really find any sandals that fit what I’m after. Birkenstocks look like they could be the answer, but I have quite wide feet and they’re quite sensitive, I get blisters easily.

I wore brand new adidas shoes and they had me bleeding everywhere. Eventually they wore in but it took forever

Hell isn't it. How I'd love to buy shoes that didn't make me bleed. Good luck with your trip and your feet.

Eva is the range of plastic lightweight Birkenstocks they do (in lots of different style-Madrid etc) but I wouldn’t recommend those other than as sliders round the pool. The corkbed ones are much more sturdy.

The plastic ones will definitely rub me raw 🤣

I live in them all summer and have worn them for loads of walking/day trips/holidays/20,000 steps round Disney etc, BUT, I love them and always have worn them. If you have never even owned a pair, why are you thinking they are the solution suddenly now? What do you normally wear in summer and why?

For day to day I wear either my adidas spezials or my new balance 740s because I am going to the gym. I need some sandals because my feet get so hot just at work, I can’t imagine how awful it’ll be in France. I’ve never done this kind of holiday before. I’ve also always wanted a pair of Birkenstocks

Tevas

but you’ve got 3 months to go and are clearly set on the arizonas! Buy them, get used to wearing them, suddenly buy a pair of teva style sandals before you go, discover you are extremely grateful you did that and wear them constantly.
enjoy having the arizonas for the pub when you are home.

I wear Arizona Birks all summer and love them so comfortable and I walk a lot in them to. Never had wearing in problems. Just make sure the size is right for you I have to size down in them.

Do tevas do any other slightly more stylish shoes? I’m not against them just don’t find them the most pleasing

Also, are they good for wide fit?

Hi op, I'm going to the same destination as you. In my younger days I hiked round the world in havaiianas but now I'm looking for the elusive sandals and came on to start my own thread. My feet get ruined these days. Ive just bought some lightweight adidas trainers in summer colours and will throw my flip flops in my bag. I really dont want to be miserable. Its hard in such a hot and stylish destination. I dont mind forking out the money for sandals but only if there is a 100% guarantee which isn't going to happen.

Yeah I do t mind my adidas but have found that at the end of the day they can be very hot and a little rub-y on the soles of my feet. I really don’t want to go for a pair of chunky trainers but feel like what I might need to do is get some sandals and some hokas or something. I have probably £150-£175 to spend all in, but have blue light discount!

These seem light and airy. I'll keep following your thread!

One thing to be aware of is that Birkenstock was sold about 4 years ago. It’s quite likely that the sale has lead to changes in manufacturing processes and quality of materials. So people (like me) who have older pairs that they still use, may find that a new pair feels different

Foughties · 28/05/2026 10:04

Like a light plastic netting type fabric 😂. I have no idea, but as light as a feather. I need to start breaking them in. I wear spezials and these are the opposite, cant imagine the hot feet taking those away.

Spezials are my everyday shoe and they just get so hot. I think I will wear them on this trip but I can’t imagine everyday in them and other trainers

I always wear Birkenstocks for walking. I have Madrid’s and Arizonas - I’ve done over 22k steps per day in them and never had a problem. I even wore them in Disney and Rome

SirChenjins · 28/05/2026 10:16

Birkenstocks kill my feet - I have a pair that are a few years old now but just wear them for short walks. Anything longer and I feel like I'm walking on rocks - and they are so heavy. Lightweight trainers and socks here - I recently bought Hoffs (the city ones) and they are fab

coneyislandoldspot · 28/05/2026 10:20

To be honest what I might go for is some Birkenstocks anyway because I’ve always wanted some, and then some good lightweight wide fit white trainers. I feel like they go with a lot?

I size down too. All mine are a 36 and I wear a 4/37 in all other shoes and sandals. I’ve bought a couple of pairs in the last four years and haven’t noticed any difference in quality.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/05/2026 10:42

I wear Birkenstock Madrids on holiday all the time and we walk A LOT. They are fine but you do need to break them in before you go. Like at least a month or two wearing them.

coneyislandoldspot · 28/05/2026 11:21

I also like these, but don’t think they’d be that comfortable for walking!

I think they’re hard on the feet even after being worn in.

RollonSpringplease · 28/05/2026 12:08

My Birks are fine for small walks, but anything further gives me huge blisters. I wear FitFlop sandals with Velcro straps for distance.

FunMustard · 28/05/2026 12:39

I love love love by Birkies and wear them all summer, the only time I've got blisters from them has been when they were new.

I think they'll be fine, as assuming you won't be walking fast as you're on holiday, it'll more be ambling around all day.

I've also got some Punkfish sandals which have a Birkie look and feel to them but have ankle straps if you're looking for that.

Those ones you last linked look like they'd rub like a bastard.

Squidlette · 28/05/2026 13:23

Considering I run, I seem to have princess feet and ankles.
Fitflop toe posts shredded my toes, even though they feel soft to the touch.
Birkies don't cradle my foot right.
Tevas hurricane are ugly as, but ok for walking to the beach. Not great for pf though.
Moshulu have saved my summer feet.
