Grey sideburns are the bane of my life

So I've had my hair cut into a sort of flicky bob that just about works with my frizzy, greasy-yet-also-dry menopausal hair.
All good.
My problem is now the stupid grey bits. I have fuzzy white sideburns. They never grow any longer, they just get thicker, wirier and bushier. They are driving me INSANE. I only have a few other strands of grey, which I don't mind at all, I don't want to dye all my hair, I just need something to sort out the Einstein-like sideburns.
I currently use a bit of gel, which works well for smoothing them but they're so thick!, and I've tried the Wow powder in brown which helps blend them in colour-wise but is a bit of mess to use.

What can I do about them? Any ideas? Buying dye for them regularly seems such a waste as you only need a tiny bit.

The grey bits are the light blue in the pic. Am not exaggerating, they really do stick out like that!

I’m interested to know the answer- I have a similar problem!

YvieYfronts · 23/05/2026 19:06

Same although mine are midway between sideburns and temple. Otherwise I only have a few strands here and there.

I dye mine with Clairol root touch up. You just mix the amount you need so one pack lasts multiple applications. It's not very long lasting- 2-3 weeks- but only a 10 minute job so easy to redo.

You could lift and brush some to the side and then shave or wax the undernear layer of hair to thin them out..dye them with the rest of your hair or use mascara. There is got2b glue in mascara that tames thrm better than gel i find. Try to set them neatly with your fingers or a brush when they are wet as if they set messed up it's harder to make them cooperate. There are youtube tutorials on sideburns grooming for women. If you are blonde bleaching them with jolene makes them more compliant and less stiff.

Me too. I have never had my hair coloured but my fab hairdresser is going to put some semi permanent colour on the grey bits at the side in a few weeks. I have hardly any grey btw. He said this is better than permanent which will end up a copper colour. I have dark brown hair.

At the moment I use the John Frieda Serum for fine hair to slick down the fuzzy grey, wiry bits

I imagine even eyelure eyebrow dye would work on them. It doesn't stain my skin personally but put vaseline aroune just in case

HappyGoLucky16 · 23/05/2026 19:30

Polar hair dye is your answer! It comes pre mixed and you only need to use as much as you need at a time. Pop it on for 10 minutes and then wash hair as normal. Game changer!!

Another option is to use the Just for Men beard dye 😂

Hear me out... you just mix a small amount and apply to the grey areas, covers it up until you get more regrowth. Clairol root touch up may be cheaper tbf, haven't costed it up.

This or £1 dye from Poundland

cannaethink · 25/05/2026 12:49

I use Clairol root touch up too. I use a 5ml medicine spoon to measure equal amounts so each box lasts 3 dyes. Quick and easy, and reasonably cheap

Came back to appreciate your drawing. I love an old school Microsoft Paint freehand sketch.

I've got a short pixie as my hair since going grey has got a mind of its own no matter how the poor hairdesser cuts it. I've now got the sides shaved off - they were wiry white and stuck out at all angles around my glasses. It's been hugely liberating and I wish I'd done it years ago.

HopeForTheBest · 27/05/2026 19:46

I can't go back to a pixie cut, although I can see the benefits, the maintenance was just too much. I can't stand going to the hairdresser!

So I've taken all the suggestions and tried dyeing just the sideburns. I've used a semi-permanent tinted grey-hair conditioner thing I had in a drawer (from when I wanted to cover over my growing-out highlights ages ago).

Anyway it's much better! It's not properly dyed, just sort of shaded, and somehow seems to be a bit less wiry too. It will require regular redoing, but it's fast, and quite easy to do (I painted it on with an old makeup brush before washing my hair, left it on for 10 mins, and then did usual hair wash).

So yay! Thank you for all the ideas, not sure why I didn't figure it out myself!
