I can't decide what to wear , what do people wear to nice places ? It's so long since I've been anywhere i'm panicking. I'm 48, 5ft 8 and a size 14 big tummy and boobs. Please inspire me:)

I believe you get 10% off and a free glass of champagne if you turn up at ANY Michelin restaurant dressed like this.

No idea why people aren't laughing at this! 🤣🤣🤣

Have a wonderful time!!!

I took my Dad to a Michelin-starred restaurant for a 9 course lunch. It was sensational.

He was wearing a grubby rugby top with some breakfast down it. I’d like to think the staff thought he was an eccentric millionaire (he wasn’t…just a bit of a scruff)

Anyway, the staff couldn’t have been more gracious and lovely and fortunately, it wasn’t too busy…😆

I’d wear palazzo pants and a nice drapey top, or a summery dress, both with my golden sandals. Definitely not trainers with a dress

I think it’s nice to make a bit of an effort, and most people do. It adds to the whole experience

As an aside, black trousers and a white shirt is risky in a restaurant: people will mistake you for staff!

@Ophir It’s perfectly normal to wear trainers with a dress in 2026. It’s not a cruise ship with bling sandals. Your feet are under a table! No one cares about trainers these days. Comfort rules.

Trainers with dresses looks outdated now is my point

My golden sandals are a chunky style, not ready for the ballroom 😄

@PendapalaHave a look at their website. It’s truly one of the best restaurants in the country and it’s pared back and all about the food.

I ate in a Michelin-starred restaurant last weekend and wore Birkenstocks, jeans and a sort of smock top after a day’s hillwalking— I was dressed about averagely for the (tiny) crowd.

My point is only that a star doesn’t necessarily indicate a dress code.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 23/05/2026 09:05

@EasilyPleased Correct. Stars are about the food!

Here’s Vogues idea of trainers and dresses. Perfectly acceptable! Just flat wear Phase 8 and trainers. Stylish dresses only and no one will remotely care under palazzo pants!

Ah, we’re back to Phase Eight

I agree.

I went out for meal last night. Just a local pub that does great food, and we all dressed up a bit. Not OTT, but it was a social get together and we all wanted to make an occasion of it. Just about everyone was wearing summer dresses and sandals.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 23/05/2026 14:48

@Ophir Regrettably MN knows little else at times. We can do better!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/05/2026 15:09

My go to for something like this is an Issey Miyake black sleeveless pleats please midi dress and black LouBous or black Karen Millen strappy sandals. Or a Sass and Bide little black dress which is beaded. Add a leather jacket. Or blazer.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 23/05/2026 18:01

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain Beaded is ott for L’Enclume. It’s in the middle of Cartmel in the Lake District. People are not glitzy there. Louboutins? It’s on a semi - rural road. It’s not in a city.

vincettenoir · 23/05/2026 18:04

You don’t need to dress up. If it were me I would wear a long skirt and a sleeveless top.

Splooterer · 23/05/2026 18:05

A nice frock probably or good linen trousers with a stylish top.

Was in a restaurant with star last week didn't dress up but didn't look a scruff. Trousers and a shirt

Katrinawaves · 23/05/2026 18:23

Last time I went to one (which was in April) I wore a pair of wide leg cream trousers with a fitted black waistcoat with nothing underneath. I’m about 10 years older than you if that helps.
