Can we tone down overly blonde highlights at home?

Rats! My daughter’s highlights have turned out way too blonde and don’t suit her. Can we tone this down a little at home?

Do you have a pic?

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/05/2026 15:23

She won’t let me take one. They are very bright though

are they too yellow? You can use purple shampoo to dull it down a bit.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/05/2026 15:25

The internet is filled with TikToks of girls blithely adding a gloss or something and ending up with lovely toned-down blonde. Just not sure I believe in them

Can you use a toner to alter the shade?

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/05/2026 15:28

Milkshake black shampoo is awesome. Adds a slightly ashy tone with no danger of purple highlights!

pouletvous · 22/05/2026 15:29

Go back to the hairdresser that did the highlights and say you are not happy

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/05/2026 15:38

Doesn’t a toner just take out yellow/brassines?

I think we need overall darkening but putting a box dye on it seems drastic.

if I had more time we could get lowlights

And yes, go back to original hairdresser - who would be helpful, we know her well - but there isn’t time

Do you mean the one in the black bottle? Can’t find one called ‘black’

I’ve ordered the black bottle one because it looks helpful - many thanks

Are the highlights too white or too yellow?

Namechange568899542 · 22/05/2026 16:02

Will she let you take a pic of the back of her head or with her face scribbled out? You’ll get far better advice if people (inc hairdressers on here) can see what the highlights look like

Both, really. They are too blonde for her skin tone, I think. She loves the colour except where it is around her face, which is why I think it needs a salon to do something … balayag-ey?

Can she fake tan or something to change her skin tone temporarily- assume it’s for prom?

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/05/2026 16:19

Now that’s an idea …

I had this issue a couple of weeks ago. I had blonde highlights and they were too light (more too white than yellow). After lots of research on here and elsewhere, I ordered Shrine Drop-It Caramel Blonde (from Amazon). This is a temporary toner and took the colour back very close to my natural shade. After a few shampoos it is wearing off but I'm now used to the highlight colour and rather like it. I think it was maybe too much of a change, and also quite silver for my golden skin tones.

I did do a patch test before using it. I didn't leave it on for very long - about 3 minutes in total - after mixing with conditioner as directed.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/05/2026 16:25

Thank you. Will
look into this. DD has a pale skin tone , which goes red rather than brown in the sun.

can I ask what your natural hair shade is? DD’s is mouse except where the sun hits it

Update: we used the ‘black’ shampoo , left it on for a few minutes, and it has definitely taken things down a notch and introduced some texture

thank you dickie! And everyone else who responded
