Lush solid henna - anyone know how to use it please?

I bought a block of this weeks ago and they did give me a Lush times with instructions which I now can't find. I know you grate it and mix with hot water but do you have to heat it as well?

Any advice welcome.

Yes, I used to use this a lot. If you end up liking the results, start taking the free shower caps from hotels because they're a lot easier for containing this slop than anything else.

I used to surround myself with newspapers and sort of sit amongst them because it would fall off and stains things quite easily.

You put it in a bowl and pour boiling water on it - say, about enough to cover it, but not too much because you can add more later. Leave it for a bit (minute or two), and it starts to go soft and then you can stir it into a paste. I used to stir it with a chopstick. It smells very grassy and organic, a bit like horse poo.

Then you slap it on your hair, wearing plastic gloves, and sit there for as long as you think is a good time. I found anything under an hour was a waste of time, but I have fine untreated hair, apparently it works a lot more quickly on hair that's been coloured or whatever before and thicker hair that takes colour better than fine.

Then you go and rinse for about 6 years. And shampoo or else you'll never get it out! Here's their online cartoon.

no don't heat it
it's frightfully messy
I've used it once or twice and couldn't be arsed with the mess so I went back to the powdered stuff from my friendly neighbourhood Indian shop.

good luck

Thanks for the advice!
So EBenes, do you mean you just put the blocks in hot water and not bother grating it? I usually wrap my head in cling film and leave it on during a day I am working from home, sometimes for about 6 hours but that is the powdered stuff.

Agree suzywong, I may have to find somewhere selling the powder, I used to get it from the Body Shop.

Yeah, I didn't grate them, I just got a little glass bowl and poured boiling water over about 2-3 of the cubes. If you're used to a day of clingfilmy head, you should be fine. Give it a try, I also think it is a lot of hard work, but I did used to do it every month or so. I hadn't heard of powder, though...

When I went to get some from the Body Shop recently they said they have had to stop selling it - something about people using it for homemade Henna tattoos and having skin reactions to it. That's why I went for the Lush variety.

Suzywong has reminded me though that I used to get 'Spiritual Sky' henna from a local Indian shop years ago.

The powder is also very messy though.

Caca is also very messy! This thread has sort of made me want to try it again though.

Go fot it, once you get over the mess and the hassle, I love the colour you get from Henna and also having no roots to deal with.
