How do you be simultaneously 'on trend' and individual?

I don't get it and therefore end up wearing a jumper and jeans every day.

You buy...something you would normally buy, say a jumper or a tee shirt but you get the 'trend' equivalent. For example, it could have a litle puff sleeve or be belted.
And rather than going top to toe trend, you mix in some of your wardrobe that you love and that suits you, like an A line skirt rather than a pencil if that suits your shape.
And wear amazing accessories, like cool wedges or a big brooch or beads.

Its not cool be be on trend with every thing anyway. Fashion victims are not cool!.

re being individual - I just buy stuff I love and think suits me (been known to get this wrong though) regardless of whether or not it's in fashion.

I used to be a dressed-up goth so don't really know how to be 'on-trend'.

My much-younger uber-trendy step-sister reckons I can look 'cutting edge' - not sure if this is a compliment or not!

Having said that I'm often in said jeans and jumpers!

Oh yes and agree with maidamess that cool accessories are the way to go.

Also individual, stylish coats and jackets that suit your figure. You can then just put plain stuff underneath.

Hats are good too!
