Help! What do i wear for a rainy members day at the chelsea flower show?

Help! I'm having a wardrobe crisis. What I'd originally planned to wear to members day at the chelsea flower show is now scrapped due to 60% chance of rain. So now I don't know what to wear.

I was going to wear a cotton dress with a long floaty one hundred stars kimono but that's now scrapped. I'm 5"2 & size 10 & because of the bloody rain whatever i wear will be covered by my rain coat anyway.

So do I just wear raincoat, black wide leg trousers & a light fleece or smartish blazer as what's the point of wearing something dressier if it's going to pour it down? I could put a full face of slap so I don't scare the flowers!

What do i put on my feet? I have trainers but they're not waterproof and hiking boots but they're ugly and clumpy and leather block heeled boots but I'm not walking round for 7 hours in those.

What do you ladies reckon?

The forecast for Chelsea tomorrow is a less than 50% chance of light rain showers for most of the day and sunshine. I reckon it's going to be much nicer than you think, for a good deal of the time you'll be indoors and you won't be on muddy ground at any stage.

I'd wear what you planned to wear and take a mac to throw on if and when necessary.

If you wear trainers, black trousers and a fleece you'll be kicking yourself it's sunny for more than 50% of the time and your lovely outfit's back in the wardrobe.

Thank you, although I'm going on Wednesday when it's expected to pour down. Just my bloody luck, I've been wanting to go for years. Now that I have finally got a ticket, the weather is crap!

Oh sorry, I'd assumed it was tomorrow.

I'd still wear the same outfit/mac combo though. I think most people will be dressed up and dodging the showers.

WideOpenBeaches · 17/05/2026 22:17

If it rains, you won’t be exactly wading through mud at Chelsea. The pathways will be solid underfoot, and everyone else will be dressed in a way having checked the forecast too!
From memory, there is a wide selection of clothes worn by people who go, so be comfortable from top to toe.

I would not recommend an umbrella as they’re a nightmare with the crowds.

Hope you have a great day…it’s inspiring and exhausting in equal measure!

Shedmistress · 17/05/2026 22:18

Just wear normal clothes.

Just bumping for some more recommendations

Above all, be comfortable. As you say, you’ll be on your feet all day. Last time I went, it was so crowded (even on members day) that you barely had a chance to register what other people were wearing as it was just a sea of people, so no need to overthink it. If it’s pouring, I guess it will be even more crowded in the indoor spaces.

Jellybean23 · 18/05/2026 07:27

When I went to members day (many years ago), it seemed like an ordinary show day. No one seemed particularly dressed up. Wear whatever is comfortable and suitable for the weather. It’s a long, tiring day.

Pandorea · 18/05/2026 07:38

Its fine to just wear jeans or trousers. You won’t feel out of place if you’re not dressed up - although lots of people are but lots aren’t either. You’ll look more like a proper gardener in jeans and a fleece!

Thank you, I might just pass myself off as a fake gardener! If today's weather is anything to go by I'll be wearing trousers, raincoat and my water proof hiking boots. It poured none stop for 2 hours here.

Have you left already? I'm in London and the Met office forecast shows <20% chance of rain all day

@Mulledjuice not left yet, will leave tomorrow morning as I'm on the outskirts of London. It rained a lot this morning but then the sun came out late afternoon, it was a bit mild but the wind kept the temperatures down.

I raided my local shopping centre for some separates and will mix and milatch with what I've already got. I bought a neutral crochet knit top, a cream boxy short cotton jacket & jeans. I'll empty the contents of my wardrobe and will attempt to create a semi formal outfit combo. All of the separates that I bought, I will wear anyway as they compliment my pre-existing wardrobe.

I don't care what others are wearing on their feet, I'm wearing my trusted NIKES.
