Options for managing patchy pubic hair changes approaching fifty

Bikinilineat49 · 16/05/2026 20:49

Hoping for some advice on pubic hair removal and as per user name 49 not shy of 50.

I have never managed to " beach ready" as in kids want to go swimming now but went with a neat tidy and quick shave approach.

In the last year however I am dealing with a whole new world where I am now bald in places, grey but still previous hair type, and grey but a very coarse straight pubic hair and am very unhappy with it's appearance.

I have a low pain threshold and only ever waxed once and wouldn't do it again as the pain and irritation didn't justify the hair free appearance. What are my options, I don't think I've read anything discussing patchy and inconsistent public hair in ladies and it is effecting my confidence.

Are you genuinely going about your day (clothed presumably ) anxious about your pubic hair? Worrying what people will think, or something else?

The possibility is that even if you resolve this to whatever standard you've built up in your mind, something will replace it. And those sort of rotating compulsive anxieties are a common feature of menopause unfortunately.

I agree, I was surprised/ upset/ shocked / dismayed for a week then got over myself. Dh isn't bothered so why should I be?

WhiskerPatrol · 16/05/2026 22:19

I don't find the regrowth after Veet is itchy - I'd give it a go and if it's too annoying, don't do it again.

mumuseli · 16/05/2026 22:23

I'm surprised that some posters are being so offhand to the OP. She's only asking for some advice. It's not that unusual for people to care about what they look like under their clothes!

Coconutter24 · 16/05/2026 22:25

Smartiepants79 · 16/05/2026 20:55

Why does it matter what it looks like? Who the hell is ever actually looking at it. This is something I just don’t get.
The only things you can sensibly do to change it is to shape it in some way- trimming etc. and dying it. You can’t replace the baldy bits. And frankly I can’t understand why you’d want to bother. It’s under your clothes 90% of the time.

OP looks at it and Op obviously doesn’t like what she sees. Just because you don’t get it, it doesn’t mean others can’t think about these things as a problem.

I think your reply is so very different from what I was asking? Your reply suggests if your DH had a problem with it, your response would be different. I have already said this is my response to my ageing body in style and beauty. Thank you for the helpful replies.

Well that made me smile.
My chin and moustache is a whole other thread but I am dealing with those

Indeed.
I find the ones on my chin appear overnight ... singly and long, but not curly!

Smallorveryfaraway · 16/05/2026 22:47

we're absolutely allowed to be bothered about something, for ourselves, nothing to do with what other people think. And at no point has the op said she's obsessing over it.
Its a crappy thing and it's ok to ask what others are doing about it to see if you can improve it for yourself.

Tigerbalmshark · 16/05/2026 22:55

Epilator if your pain threshold is reasonable. If you are just doing your bikini line and not a full Brazilian, should only take a minute or two. Much quicker and less messy than waxing, but similarly slow regrowth and lack of stubble. Trim first so you aren’t dealing with long hairs (that does hurt, they get tangled in the epilator).

Pineapplesunshine · 16/05/2026 23:32

Hi Op, it’s funny the things that happen with ageing that we don’t expect - when I was young I thought it was just about wrinkles and now I realise that’s the least of it! Anyway, I am not necessarily suggesting this as a solution if you don’t otherwise need / want to take it, but ive been on testosterone for a few months now for perimenopause and that is the only difference I’ve noticed - that things seem to have filled out having previously grown sparse.

Because the whole area is now so patchy just the bikini line won't work, I'm thinking of going with a far smaller area, not landing strip as I genuinely don't think I could deal with pain but something in between and maybe a sensitive skin hair removal cream for some areas?

Thank you for your reply, unfortunately my understanding is any hormonal treatment is off the table due to a history of blood clotting disorder for me and familial triple negative breast cancer.

I’d love mine to go patchy. I’m part Greek and have always been very hairy 😭 I just shave all mine off- easier than trimming etc and if done regularly the regrowth is easier to tackle. Mine extends onto my inner thighs.

Whataflippincircus · 16/05/2026 23:50

Personally I’d just trim it really short with scissors.

Living up to your username.
Yes affecting.
Having read lots of threads since pregnant with my first in 2014, contributed hopefully constructively to some, I don't think I will be venturing to ask for advice again.

@Bikinilineat49 don't be put off I'm sure other MNetters will advise .

Honestly, there's lots of people who genuinely want to be helpful and supportive-I looked inot lasering just to avoid waxing, and worried my skin might be too dark, so I did read about hair/skin colour with regards to laser, and some places only do pale skin/dark hair.
But you can google some laser places that can do blond hair as presumably they could remove grey too? If that might be something you would want?

Josephinemylove · 17/05/2026 05:12

@Bikinilineat49i really was shocked how much better and less painful my new lady is and for me it’s so much less hassle than the d endless rashes from Veer or razors. A trimmed was ok but felt a bit bristly. I now have underarms done too and that’s marvellous as they only grow back a bit wispy

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 17/05/2026 05:19

I have shaved the whole lot off twice a week in the bath for many years, along with legs and underarms. No idea if I’m grey or patchy. I have no itching or painful regrowth.

MyGammyEye · 17/05/2026 05:25

Mischance · 16/05/2026 21:51

Mine vanished like snow in summer when I was only a few years older than you. I took it on the chin!!!

This made me laugh!

50 here, it's all thinned everywhere and worked it's way up to my chin. I thought I was pulling out a little jawline hair the other day... My face pulled out with it and then the damn thing curled like a ribbon for a present!

@OP if it's mostly neat and central, I'd just use scissors. Veet around the edges because I find anything else makes me itch.

I've never managed to wax beyond my legs.
It's inevitable really. HRT could make a difference to thickness, but it's going to go... Neaten up in whatever way suits you best.

Milkmonitoring · 17/05/2026 05:40

i have a bikini like trimmer with a wee guard on it that takes it down fairly tight - like a one maybe? I just use that. I know exactly what you mean - it’s not a thick bush anymore it’s sparse and patchy. And the pubes appear down to about my knees

StarlightLady · 17/05/2026 07:18

Bikinilineat49 · 16/05/2026 21:12

Thank you for the more considerate replies.
I maybe need to try again with the waxing and yes a smaller area rather than my forever had "triangle" might make me less self conscious of the variety of coverage if that makes sense.

I’m in my later 40s and I’ve had monthly Hollywood waxes for quite some time; all off is far easier to maintain than any hybrid part on part off. Looking at myself in the mirror, l have no idea what l would look like with hair, or the colour now, it has been so long.

l would suggest following up your idea of trying again. The first couple are uncomfortable, so l would suggest that you consider this another first time, so to speak. Take a couple of paracetamol beforehand and don’t be “done” just before a period. I don’t need the pain killers any more, it seems my body has got used to it. I think you will find it less itchy and less sweaty (women perspire? Huh!) in the warmer weather.

Finally, for those taking the who is going to see it point of view, I’m pleased to say l may be in my 40s but not totally hidden a way from the select frw.

twilightcafe · 17/05/2026 07:23

OriginalPedant · 16/05/2026 21:22

Just get it waxed off.

*affecting

Agreed. Getting the right waxer makes all the difference. They will advise on aftercare - they want you to have as comfortable a wax as possible so you keep coming back.

YANBU. I have a Brazilian monthly. I can deal with the odd grey on my head but hate having a grey fanny.

No way, dh gets what he's given and should be grateful for it quite frankly, that's not what I meant at all. Good luck with a solution.

JaspersCarrott · 17/05/2026 07:38

I get dark hairs on the inside of my thighs :( and my public hair is still coarse, even after menopause.
I use Veet, or Nair, mostly before a holiday. It can be a bit messy - probably because I'm clumsy - and if you're worried about an Vett accidentally getting into any sensitive areas, I have a little tub of Vaseline that I dab on to act as a barrieet

PersephoneParlormaid · 17/05/2026 07:43

I have a bald patch too, but being fat means I can only see it if I look in the mirror. I use a lady trimmer and take it down to a number 2.
I get what you mean about the changes affecting you. I used to have dark, shiny, curly hair down there, now it’s grey, straight and wiry which just reminds me how old I’m getting.
