How do you keep your hair out of the way while doing makeup and skincare?

I've recently thought I'm developing a receding hairline, but realised it's more that my hair has become very flat at the roots. I think the reason is that I keep pulling my hair back - when I get out of the shower I wrap it up in a turban, and I use a fabric headband to keep it out of the way while I wash my face, do my makeup or put on skincare (which can take a while). When I take the headband off it's flat as a pancake and a real pain to get the volume back in with products, hairdryer etc.

I obviously need to change the way I do things, but my hair is a chin length bob so I can't just tie it up - I need to keep the front bits out of the way. What do you use? Shall I buy some hair clips? I don't think one big crocodile clip will work, I have too many short bits of hair, and I'm a bit nervous of clips pulling my hair out - it's very fragile due to iron deficiency, WLIs so I have to be careful with it. Is there a particular brand of clips that are gentle?

I use hair dividing clips to section mine away from my face while doing skin care/makeup. Asda sell them really cheap for a pack of 4 or 6, can't remember. Also those big clippy things I call crocodile teeth ones? They are good too. ❤️

I have a plastic / fabric headband that is quite loose. Or a pair of clean pants!

Now that is one recommendation I really wasn't expecting 😂

I use knickers as well 😂

buy silk pillowcases and a silk bonnet for sleeping/keeping hair in and off face
you could also get a microfibre hair towel turban instead of real towels
they'll prevent breakage
LMAO at knickers though i've never heard or thought of that
sik scarf or silk headbands are good one too

Hair claws: one for the sides and front, one for the back.

Wash hair in the shower, microfibre turban on, skin care and makeup, remove turban and blow dry.

I’ve used pants on my head to decorate, especially ceilings.

Thanks everyone, some good suggestions that I'll look into.

I found some ancient sectioning clips and used them this evening, they're ok but I still had lots of wisps getting in the way.

I've already been using a microfibre turban in the mornings when my hair's wet, but that's definitely pulling my hair back and making it flatter at the crown. Maybe I need to find a looser one or one in a different material.

Funnily enough I can see how pants would work well and I am tempted to try them next, although I can't imagine what DH and the kids will think!

I have the same hair and I use these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dariya-Japan-Hair-Fringe-Magic/dp/B003JOVR6K

I like the look of @Keroppi's volumizing clips though!

ButterYellowFlowers · 16/05/2026 23:15

A claw clip

Shinyandnew1 · 16/05/2026 23:16

Just a claw clip.

I use a silk pillowcase for help with general hair loss and an old fashioned shower cap for cleanse / make up. I comb my hair in the shower when it has conditioner on, it lessens the drag. I squeeze the water out with a towel, but don’t leave it wrapped in the towel I comb it into style then put the cap on.
My mother always used knickers on her head.

Pushmepullu · 17/05/2026 00:19

I came on here for ideas to keep my bob from flopping over my face when I do yoga and Pilates but I don’t think I’ll be taken seriously with a pair of knickers on my head!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 17/05/2026 06:31

Edited- I should have RTFT🙄

coolcahuna · 17/05/2026 06:59

I use a really thin plastic Alice band, the type you get in sets for a few pounds in Primark

namechange0998776554799000 · 17/05/2026 07:08

I do use a shower cap if I'm not washing my hair, but that has the same problem of squashing my hair flat at the crown.

A thin plastic alice band might be worth a try actually, I can just make sure to put it a few cm back so it doesn't flatten the front bit

@namechange0998776554799000yep I have super curly hair so put the Alice band further back

BreatheAndFocus · 17/05/2026 11:35

A bit off piste here, but I solve this problem by washing my hair after work (ie late afternoon, early evening). I hardly ever wash it in the mornings as it’s just a nuisance when you’re in a rush and trying to get ready. IMO it adds unnecessary pressure.

I use a silk pillowcase and when I wake up my hair is still looking good and freshly washed, even though it was done the afternoon/evening previously. I then hold it back out of my face to do make up with a soft fabric alice band or two or three of those mini claw clips, pulling two or three sections of the front top bits back and clipping them on the top of my head.
