Going against the grain, I'm not a fan of the recent Marks & Spencer stuff

since Gillian Anderson I've sent back more stuff than I've kept
Love the cut work jacket in the first drop, but I found all the rest of the pale cream and brown stuff rather depressing and that colour really suits me normally
Ordered the print swimsuit and the fit was terrible, the crochet shorts set as well.
In the end, I've gone back to ZARA. I'm

optimistic that the next lot will be better, but it might be too late for me to buy any more summer stuff by then.

@70isaLimitNotaTarget I have a couple of pairs of linen blend trousers and they don't crease very much at all.

I walked in our local store and walked straight out again a couple of weeks ago! I needed work clothes and everything seemed to be aimed at people spending two weeks in the Med. I’m just sick of the fashion at the moment, everything is wide and boxy and bland colours.

This is SO RIGHT.
endless very strappy dresses

Me too.
I thought last year's fashion was a lot better.
The sizing is so variable. I ordered 2 pairs of barrel jeans in extra short & the ecru pair was wider on the waist & more than 2 inches longer than the mid blue iteration. When I tried to write a review to this effect M&S refused to publish it. They already really piss me off with their reviews instructions. So that will be the last time I ever review for them.

The jeans are generally much smaller around the waist now. To buy the right size I have to size up & the hips are way too baggy. The Sienna Miller barrels of yesterday years are still the perfect fit & an inch wider on the waist . They haven't published the fact that the sizing has changed, but it's all over social media. And there's still no response.
Meanwhile they're paying numerous Instagrammers to promote their clothes. They're all young & you never see them wearing the clothes again.
I'm old enough to remember them chasing the youth market before and it didn't work - their profits dropped.

I’m annoyed at them at the moment anyway because I really like the carrot jeans and even the long ones are not long enough for me 😞Wish they did extra long! Have recently bought the wide leg cropped jeans though and really like them. Fit really nicely.

Couldn’t find anything else I liked though other than a plain black top I needed as a basic to go with other things.

Lifelover16 · 18/05/2026 12:29

I think a lot of their clothes look cheap, lots of synthetic fabrics and plastic shoes. No decent dresses either - I can’t wear strappy and the rest look rather ugly.
However the linen blend trousers are ok for every day, and I did get the ivory/navy bouche jumper which I am pleased with.

That pink dress with the pleated front seems to be hanging front & centre at every M&S I go into. I like the look of it, but not sure 50 year old me would buy it… 35 year old me used to get gorgeous similar stuff in M&S 15 years ago… In recent years the “nice” (or naice?) things I got were a Sienna Miller skirt, Autograph blazer, Bella Freud jeans. Other than that, it’s just t-shirts, chinos, kidswear in the Sale. And the Summer Beauty Bag is $$$!

ArwenUndomniel · 18/05/2026 12:43

I liked the look of some of it online, but it's a bit disappointing in person. There are some fairly plain white cotton tops that I was really tempted by which turned out to be pretty much transparent when I tried them on, and at the age of 47 I'd rather not have my entire bra on display. The jeans are still good, however. I haven't noticed the sizing issue that other people have mentioned, but I think it's because I have quite a short torso and the high-waisted styles do actually hit my natural waistline.

TragicMuse · 18/05/2026 12:49

They have some gorgeous deep pink linen and I love the colour but the actual styles aren’t really for me. I rarely look in M&S unless there’s a specific item or reason I’m there.

I bought two jumpers in the sale in February. I love the red one, but the fine merino jumper has gone into holes in one of the arms. I have stitched them back together, but I'm disappointed with the quality. My Uniqlo fine merino wool jumper is brilliant, but their range of colours is poor. The muted, sludgy colours don't suit me.

the marketing is better than the rather bland reality

I totally agree 👍🏻 the garments look great on the models but the reality is the are ill fitting and badly made.
