Interview outfit help!

I have a last minute job interview on Thursday. It’s for a teaching job. I am thinking of navy trouser suit, single breasted blazer, slim leg ankle length trousers, black loafers? What top? Would you carry a bag - handbag / work bag type of bag? I haven’t had an interview in 20 years!

Sounds fine. Maybe a pale top?

I always take a reasonably smart but practical bag which can fit an A4 folder so that I can take materials for the interview lesson, qualification certificates, board pens (just in case) etc. And a short book for time in between things when there is sometimes a bit of waiting.

Ok - possibly no one interviewing you will care, but if they do, slim ankle length trousers may suggest you don’t keep up with evolving trends (and so may struggle with new ideas in your profession). Could you get some wide legged trousers instead? Instep length or slightly longer but not dragging on the ground. Cropped only if you’re certain that’s your absolute best look. It isn’t for most people. (I know narrow cropped trousers are available to buy in even fashionable shops, but …)

Plain white cotton crew neck. Or a plain blouse with tiny lapels. Only wear a buttoned up to the neck shirt if you know it looks excellent on you.

It’s teaching job so slim leg trousers are fine.

I’d pair a blue suit with brown or tan shoes, black clashes with blue. A cream top underneath. The suit sounds perfect.

That sounds perfect. Nice shirt with it in a silky fabric looks great with a trouser suit.

You won't go wrong with that.

Good luck x

The main thing is to look clean, neat and tidy. I have interviewed hundreds of people for teaching jobs and never thought about what they were wearing. That said, I nearly lost the best job I ever had - at a university - because they said I looked too smart at the interview ! (I wore a shift dress and blazer).

I'd carry a bag yes because where would I put my keys, phone, purse etc 🤣 but yes no black with navy as pp suggested it doesn't look good together! I'd go a light top and brown/tan shoes with a navy suit.
If you're wanting more smart/casual I always find jeans with nice shoes and a nice blouse is good too.

Teachers tend not to wear suits even for interviews. Wear one if that’s what makes you feel confident but don’t feel you have to be super-smart. Definitely no jeans though - plenty of schools have a ‘no jeans’ policy.
