My nail has started to tear half way down, I am scared that it will catch on something and rip and that will really hurt.

any suggestions welcome

put a plaster on it until you can get some nail glue

Nail glue is super glue, so yes you can.

However, glueing a split nail together won't really work, it will stick but will come back apart. You are better to file it off down to the tear.

can't file it down, its too far down. Will be filing on raw skin.

If it rips off it is going to be much worse.

Don't glue it. Cut the nail to as absolutely short as you can, as close to the tear as you can, and then all you can do is leave it to grow out.
