Do men's shirts sit well over a bust?

I have a notion for a pink cotton button down shirt for summer, tucked into my lovely cream wide legged trousers. I've seen a gorgeous men's one on vinted but I'm not sure about wearing a men's cut while boobed. I know it's only a fiver if I don't really like it but I'll keep looking if the consensus is to avoid.

It is possible to get darts put in by a seamstress or tailor, I've thought about it myself but never done it.

They tend not to look right on women if you wear them buttoned up and tucked in - tight and baggy in the wrong places. Can you not find a women’s fitted shirt that fits the bill?

NO

If they fit around your boobs, then they likely won’t fit on the shoulders or arm holes. Maybe try one on in, say, M&S to get an idea?

The look you describe does sound lovely to waft about in, so you’re onto something!

I wear men's shirts and have big boobs, but I am very tall with long arms so although they are slightly oversized the sleeves are in proportion on me.

PhaedraTwo · 11/05/2026 09:08

No. The collar will be too wide and the sleeves too long. If they fit on the chest they won't fit on the hips as men’s shirts narrow in there.

No

Depends on your proportions. Women who like wearing men’s shirts often have them altered at the shoulders and collar for a better fit. Which may be worthwhile for vintage Charvet, maybe not so much for vintage C&A!

squashyhat · 11/05/2026 09:15

In my experience it's hips that are the issue. Too tight.

There’s a craze at the moment to take a man’s shirt, remove the collar, take an inch off the bottom hem and sew it on as a ruffle around the collar riser. Fold up the cuffs to elbow height.
So they’ve removed the two greatest obstacles to women wearing men’s shirts, the collar and cuffs.

The shirt also needs to be roomy enough to accomodate boobs- the crafters use creative posing to avoid it being obvious!

If I wanted to buy and wear a man’s shirt I’d look at the construction and maybe add vertical diamond darts front and back. That way you don’t cut into the fabric. Or safety pins and a ribbon to cinch the back waist inside.

Perfidia · 11/05/2026 09:36

But obviously if you just want a nice shirt - buy one from a decent women’s shop that uses excellent natural fabrics and generous cutting. (And still buy to fit your largest measurement and have the rest altered to fit.)

Sgtmajormummy · 11/05/2026 09:47

^^ That would be much more than the OP’s fiver!

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 11/05/2026 09:50

It'll be closer to £9 with buyer protection and postage. Potentially worth a cheeky offer to bring the overall price down though! You can always sell it on if it doesn't work.

HollywentLightly · 11/05/2026 10:44

It sounds like a pass this time, the colour of the short is just gorgeous and it looks to be a substantial cotton rather than the much looser weave and linen mix women's shirts I've seen. I'm trying to buy second hand as much as I can and as I was going to take a punt on a very different look for me, I don't want to go mad either on price or having to modify something (which I do from time to time, but neither the time nor inclination at the moment).

Thanks for all the info, I'll keep looking.

Have a look at Bravissimo shirts on vinted (sadly not made new any more), the only ones I have ever found that don't gape.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 11/05/2026 11:36

@HollywentLightly there's nothing to stop you taking a few shirts from the men's department into the women's changing rooms to try on in store (slightly different for formal shirts as they are sold folded but M&S etc will have samples on hangers that you can offer up). Try a few on and see if you like the look. PP are making good points about having things altered but it doesn't sound like you want a very fitted look. As I said I wear a lot of men's shirts as a very tall hourglass with a large bust and I like the slouchy, oversized effect. Men's shirts (and knits) are more likely to be made from natural fabrics and I find the fabric tends to be a much denser weave which is less transparent and doesn't show your bra!
