Another Wedding guest one - summer formal

Sorry.
Can anyone suggests styles for “summer formal”. Reception will be marquees on the family estate. They are wealthy but not ostentatious. Spend lots of time in London.

I’m late 50’s wedding is the last week of August.

I’m thinking a maxi dress but I can’t imagine any that don’t look either informal or too done. I don’t want to look like I’m off to the races. Or beach nightclub.

Any suggestions of styles that work for older size 14 please?

Something like this from Holland Cooper?

@Doseofreality ooh that’s nice.

I think I would need to tone down the formality a bit ( keep the structure, lose the belt maybe).

Thank you I shall have a look at tea dress es rather maxi dresses..

let us know a little more about your usual style etc.

these might be good in terms of dress code
Midi shirt dress
Maxi

Or Hobbs higher end stuff is usually nice - florals, silk etc

UserM6 · 10/05/2026 15:10

Thanks @Levithecat the first Sandro dress looks like a contender!

My normal style is a bit arty . I am olive skinned, long hair so suit things a bit interesting.
However now I’m going grey I look dishevelled rather than Boho. I do have this dress ( Closet London) which is calf length but I think the material looks too cheap for this wedding,

I think that dress would be fine without the awful fascinator and with pointy toed flats, not heels.

That is beautiful!! I need to convince one of my DCs to get married this summer!

@Levithecat I have a wardrobe full of Desigual! It really suited me in my 30’s and 40’s but I feel like I’ve done it to death.

Perhaps why I am struggling getting my head round anything else.

Ahhh yes the dress you posted a pic of made me think of it.
when you say you’ve done it to death, is it that you’re bored of it, or you think it’s too young for you? Because I’m sure it’s not!

It was very much my go to and I still wear their dresses to work. I’m tired off it.
The style doesn’t feel particularly formal in the context of this wedding (but I do love that fan dress …)
