Adult cloth sunhat composed of triangular sections wanted

Does anyone know where I can buy an adult cloth sunhat composed of triangular sections like the one I have linked for children? It doesn't need to be reversible.

I have an ancient one that originally belonged to my MIL but it is literally falling to pieces - it is excellent but its crown has holes in now! I have considered taking it apart to use as a pattern but I suspect I'd make a mess of constructing a new one.
All the adult cloth sunhats I have seen are cylindrical with a round lid on top and I find that they don't fit very well and are much more inclined to lift off in a breeze.

Apologies, I have just realised that this one has a top section 😞

I’ve looked up vintage cotton Sun hats, 1960s/70s and found this if it’s any good?

I can’t understand why my link hasn’t posted.
I used the link icon and pasted it in. I’ll try without:

Yes, that's exactly the type of hat though mine has a small brim. That's a sewing pattern though and my ability with trying to make clothes is somewhat random!
Thank you!

I’ve found this one. It almost killed me though! Why are there so many for children but none for adults???

https://www.sundayafternoons.co.uk/products/sauvie-bucket-hat

That's exactly the right style but sadly it's a winter one - though maybe one with an insulating lining for winter would keep the heat out in summer??

Hmm... just noticed it says "Do Not Wash, Do Not Bleach, Line Dry, Do Not Iron, Do Not Dry Clean". I think a non washable hat worn in summer by me would turn into a smelly health hazard after a couple of months.

Thank you very much for searching, though, @SweepLovesSoo

If you have a good seamstress or tailor near you take the hat and see if they can replicate it. Or maybe a millenary shop although where I live they don't seem to be around anymore. But I'm in the US and 'hat wearing' is pretty rare.

I know just the hat you mean. I've looked for them too and they don't seem to exist, other than for kids.

I belong to a local walking group - not long walks - 6-8 miles twice a week. So just want a light weight hat that doesn't easily get blown away and that I can stuff in my pocket when not needed.
Sigh
Loads of places round here sell sunhats (I live in a seaside town) but not like my old one.
Reminds me of dustpans - I can't seem to easily buy the type that were common in my childhood, the ones these days are mostly like plastic shovels. Useless.

It's not exactly the same, but would
this one do the job?

Uniqlo have what you seek.

Confusedmermaid1 · 06/05/2026 04:19

There are probably more on there but this is the first one I found (and it’s reversible)

Motorina · 06/05/2026 07:40

Have you tried on a kids one? By age 6 kids skulls aren’t far off adult size, so you may find the largest size fits you fine.

ElectoralControversy · 06/05/2026 08:03

Thinking outside the box a bit, is there an outdoor shop anywhere near you you could have a look and try some on?

I have a hat that does all the things you say but looks nothing like the one you posted - I'm assuming high fashion isn't a factor here?!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/05/2026 08:20

I’m glad it looks like the S&B detectives have found some of the style you want, OP!

I’ve taken more to hat wearing in the last year - I hurt an eye and it became horribly light sensitive and although it’s calmed down I’ve learned the benefits. I only wear ones with ties - I think I must have more slippery hair or something, I see people in bucket hats and have no idea how they stay put in a breeze.😂 I think a lot of grownups nowadays use baseball hats - I’ve got one which is fairly deep on the crown but I’d have lost it many times if I didn’t have it secured with a cap retaining clip. This is just a piece of string with a crocodile clip on each end, one of which goes on the hat and the other onto the neck of your shirt. If I don’t want to wear the hat and am not wearing a jacket with big enough pockets to stuff it into I can use this to hang it off my bag. So that might be an alternative solution.

MotherWol · 06/05/2026 09:15

If you don’t find what you’re looking for it might be worth asking over on the Arts and Crafts board, I bet there’s a few seamstresses over there who’d take on the commission for you!

HatStickBoots · 06/05/2026 09:22

Seasalt and Etsy both look perfect. I looked at what’s available in Moubtain warehouse and there was nothing like a tulip hat.
