Adapalene (Differin) for teen DD - advice please

DD13 has had bad acne for a couple of years, on her face back & shoulders. She's been using 47skin which has helped, but it's still bad so I did an EConsult with the GP today. I asked for a face to face appointment or at least a phone call, but all I got was a text saying he's prescribed Adapalene.

From googling it seems it's a retinol - hopefully different to the medik8 one that destroyed my skin barrier! The pharmacy didn't have it in stock so I'll have to wait a few days to read the actual leaflet, but I'm hoping someone here who's used it (or had it for their teen) can help with some questions:

  1. The 47skin body wash she's been using contains salicylic acid, am I correct she needs to stop using it when she's using the Adapalene? The face wash doesn't but I wonder if it's best to stop using that too?
  2. Can anyone recommend a good gentle cleanser to use instead? Should I still get her anti-acne products, or switch to something with no actives in, in case the combination with the cream is too harsh/drying?
  3. I get the impression she will need to use a moisturiser. Can anyone recommend a gentle one? Any ingredients to avoid? I'm going to find it tricky to choose one because personally I've tried loads of moisturisers in my lifetime that have irritated my skin or given me spots! The kind of products I've ended up with now are way too expensive and adult for DD.
  4. I know that SPF after using a retinol is important but persuading DD to use one every day is going to be a huge battle. Plus so many SPFs cause spots... Any tips from anyone with a teen who's used Adapalene?

Any other tips & advice much appreciated!

Depending on how much you mind spending the la roche posay cleansers are really gentle. There's the effeclar foaming gel which is my favourite and there's the toleriane one which is soo gentle. They're a bit spenny but really good. Cerave products are also good if you want something cheaper. I have used salicylic acid cleansers with retinol before it just might be a bit aggressive and upset her skin.

SPF is a bit trial and error. If you don't mind the wait asian beauty brands are usually a lighter formula. The ones they sell in boots and the like are reformulations and in my experience not as good. I like the biore UV watery essence which is japanese. You can get it from stylevana. Its quite cheap too. From the UK I hear the avene thermal mineral spf is really good. With SPF she might want to try to double cleanse with a balm/oil then a normal cleanser as spf can cause spots if not completely removed.

Definitely worth checking out some Asian skincare as it's often cheaper and higher quality. A lot of their SPF has a lighter feel. I hate greasy or heavy feeling sunscreen so I'm with her on that one.

I have a lot of K beauty (for myself!), including two Beauty of Joseon SPFs. I do like them and I don't know why I hadn't considered it for her!

Thanks for the other recommendations, I was just browsing Boots and thinking La Roche Posay might be a good idea, I've seen it recommended a lot although never tried it myself. I'll look at CeraVe too

My DS is using it, he likes centella moisturiser by dermatica and la roche posay sunscreen, although his application of all three is sporadic at best. I think he should use cetaphil face wash but he prefers soap.🙄

SuperGinger · 01/05/2026 19:06

He was prescribed it because he had issues with the smell of other creams and lotions

Would definitely recommend la roche posay effeclar purifying cleansing gel as PP above. Really gentle but good. The green one (micropeeling) is also good. I tend to use the cleansing gel at night and the micropeeling one in the morning - although I eventually took roaccutane so don't actively have acne now.

They quite often have 20% off.

I took DS 14 to GP for his acne as I wanted Differin. They wouldn't give it to him and said he needed to try benzyl peroxide/ clindamycin cream first. He's been on that about a month but no huge benefit yet. He also uses 47 skin but I'm also not sure if that is helping.
I like the La Roche Posay anthelios spf oil control (or the spf 30 effaclar duo spf+). Most normal sun creams give me acne but I'm ok with those.

My son has just started on this and is using La Roche Posay Toleraine cleanser and Effaclar H ISO Biome moisturiser which were both recommended for use with acne treatments. We were told to put the moisturiser on before the retinol and then another layer afterwards to reduce the risk of irritation

Thank you all! Good to hear from others with experience with it, fingers crossed it will work. Looks like LRP is definitely the way to go, I will pick some up for her when we get the prescription
