Tretinoin

Enigma54 · 30/04/2026 17:46

For those of you who use tretinoin, where do you purchase it from please?

I have melasma which I want to try and tackle ( not easy!) but don’t want to commit to a monthly subscription ( yet)

I’ve seen that it can be bought from various online pharmacies, so just wondered which one might be best?

Am also aware that Tret works in partnership with hydroquinone for melasma. Maybe I would be better off with an online dermatologist?

Thanks.

do not just buy some random tretonin from any foreign random website! you will burn your skin off. I use subscription with skin in me, they are very good back up on my skin. Looks awesome. I have been a member for over a year

You are right. Best to go with a reputable company. I won’t be
buying from abroad.

@Enigma54 it’s not a subscription with Boots so you just buy as you need it. There’s an online consultation form to complete and you upload photo ID and photos showing the areas you want to treat. It gets approved by a GP and then you get a text message when it’s ready to collect. I ordered on Tuesday and collected yesterday, so it’s super quick

That sounds like a possibility for me then. Please can you post the Boots link? I hope you have good results with your new cream.

I had a subscription with Skin & Me for around 6 months, it's not the cheapest but I did find it was a good intro to using tret. They start you off on a really low dose (0.006) which minimises irritation, and I laddered up to 0.015. I've since bought 3 x 30g of 0.025 from Skinorac for around £30, which should last me to the end of the year.

Start off doing the sandwich method. It only works if you build up to consistent use.
I couldn’t tolerate it at all so I do a course of laser treatments once a year.
I’m very disciplined about SPF

Dermatica. But you can slow the deliveries / payments down so it’s much cheaper than first seems.

You need to be using a really good sunscreen first. I use vit c and then cerave 50 as a moisturiser and then normal altruist 50 on top. My skin is now quite dry and it seems happy with that.

I used the mixed formula at first. I went up too high too quickly and ran into issues with discolouration around my chin.

I’ve gone back down to 0.25 2-3 times a week and using a niacinamide 10% serum in between (loving the simple one) - I think that’s extremely helpful. I was already using a daily vit c.

I also think the pampered wolf’s advice for starting tret is really good on YouTube.

Also waiting about 10-20 mins after washing your face before applying. I love the dermatica peptide and ceramide moisturiser over the normal cerave lotion that Pampered Wolf suggests. Then I use Vaseline on top.

Less is more with tret. Don’t think twice about having a break for a week.

Before I tried tret I had some success with the beautypie vitamin c capsules morning and night when my melasma went a bit out of control.

Do the laser treatments fade the melasma? Any side effects?

Thankyou, that’s sound advice.

I’ve got the Altruist sun screen and also the Eucerin Spf50 anti pigmentation. I even use sun screen at night because my melasma is so bad. I’ve got Body Shop 10% Vitamin C serum, which I use before applying my SPF.

Tret has made an enormous difference to my skin. I had melasma and it has gone, my skin is more even and my complexion is brighter. I didn't use it in combination with anything else for the melasma. I am frequently in Spain and buy it OTC in pharmacies when I am there. A €14 tube lasts me around 3 months. It's marvelous stuff!

Hi,
can you tell me what I have to ask for in Spain , is it a certain brand? or do I just ask for Tret ? ignore me I have just seen already answered

Just had a quick look at all the Boots tretinoin products and they are out of stock. Must be popular?

@staringatthesun did you start on the the lowest dose and work upwards with the tretinoin? Did it eliminate your melasma completely?

Has anyone bought tretinoin from Pharmasonline?

It's called Retirides. You can Google image it and show the pharmacist a photo if you are not confident to ask for it. It does come in three (I think) strengths, make sure you start with the lowest one and use that until your skin gets used to it.

I was using Klira but they are expensive at £75 a month so have recently switched to Uncouth at £24 pm. They have changed my formula slightly and for the better. https://www.uncouth.co.uk/

Combo of tretinoin and hydroquinone has completely obliterated my melasma. But I’ve got prescription strength from a dermatologist.

From what I understand to really protect skin when melasma is an issue you need pigmented sunscreen too. I don’t know if bareminerals powder has what’s needed there but I use that on top of the altruist.

In the summer I sometimes switch to la poche rosay tinted.

Also use blue blocking screen protectors on phone and screen and turn the yellow hue on both.

I am with Dermatica I started it for hyperpigmentation. I must have skin like a boot because they prescribed 0.5 to begin with and then I quickly went up to 1.0 and now I'm on 1.0 with Tranexamic acid and azeliac acid. I've never had any peeling. I sandwich for a couple of days with each new prescription but quickly stopped. I can't say I've noticed too much difference in my skin but then it wasn't bad to begin with. you can pause Dermatica and I've done this a few times and it's really straightforward . My friend has a prescription with UnCouth and she's happy with them. Uncouth is a two month prescription where Dermatica is one.
I also use Eucerin Anti-Pigment Night Cream from time to time and I really, really like the feel of that.
one difference I have noticed is that since I was young I could use any anything on my skin and it'd be absolutely fine But since tret - I haven't found any moisturiser with any kind of scent in it - will tingle- it it quickly wears off but I I stick to completely unscented now.

Had LaseMD, day or two downtime where I was a bit red and swollen. What is great is that it works on skin texture and fine lines too.
