Vari-focals help needed

Does anyone on here have vari-focals? I got some last week as was sick of having to switch from distance to reading glasses at work.

I fully expected them to take some getting used to and I am persevering but they are useless.

Distance is fine as long as I drive with my head slightly bowed. Reading is impossible. I look at the till screen at work and it is completely blurred.
Everything swims if I move my head from side to side, shapes are distorted, looking down at my cup when making 2 coffees is fine but the other cup is an odd shape because I see it out of the corner of my eye.
So I cant use the till at work or my laptop despite trying to persevere.
Dont even get me started on the headaches!

Is it just me or does everyone have the same problems at first?

If you've paid for level 4 it shouldn't be like that. I get level 3, always have, and my first pair I was able to wear without issue straight away. I have quite a strong myopia prescription, mild astigmatism and mild presbypia.

I was aware of slight blurring in the periphery until I adapted to turning my head to look at things, but it was minimal.

When I get a new prescription I am initially aware of a slight distortion to the straight lines of screens, as if the screen were narrower on one side than the other, but then my brain seems to adjust somehow (and if I put an old pair on for any reason like dying my hair to avoid damaging current ones, I see the same distortion in the old pair).

Glad to hear you are going back. Do they offer any guarantee that if you can't get on with them, they'll swap for separate reading glasses?

I have normal varifocals for everyday wear but have some computer glasses for work. They only have the reading bit at the bottom and then the middle bit is more mid range to allow me to see the screen perfectly. For using your laptop you might need a pair of those.

I have these too. My old frames have the reading/screen prescription and my new ones are got day to day/driving use.

I have astigmatism and adjusted straight away as per my post above! I must be lucky. I love my varifocals.

I tell you what else are good (and take zero getting used to if you already wear contacts) - varifocal contact lenses!

Oh, I'd love varifocal contact lenses. I don't think I'm suitable though. They offered me two different strengths, one for each eye.

My prescription is really strong though, so that's probably the problem.

@DeadBug I have two different strengths too. I’m very short sighted and I couldn’t see anything in the close or mid range with my distance-only contacts anymore as my eyes have aged. I got a free trial from Specsavers and I’m really pleased with them, they’re comfier than my old lenses (bought online from DaySoft) but they’re more expensive so I only wear them if I’m going out out, maybe three times a month.

I’m long since the “men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses” stage!

I've been wearing varifocals for years and still get an odd feeling on stairs for a few days when I change my prescription. The last time I went to Specsavers I knew the prescription was very wrong straight away - it's always a bit odd trying to reset your head to the right position for close/far away but these were completely wrong straight out of the box. Afte much discussion with the sales guy (who kept insisting the lenses were correct according to the prescription) they agreed to retest my eyes and it was WAY out.

Definitely go back op, it shouldn't be this bad still.

I have astigmatism and bought 2 pairs of varifocals for £120 from Asda opticians

I loved them from the minute that I put them on. Same with the sunglasses version and 3rd standard pair that I bought from Asda too.

sorry @letmebetheone, yours don’t sound right at all.

i don’t find the multifocal contact lenses quite as good for near or distance vision, but they’re great for sports, gym etc.
