Thinning hair

My hair is thinning noticeably-I’ve always had a bob all one length but wonder if it had layers in it would make it look thicker. Any hairdressers here could advise me?

Not a hairdresser, but do you know the reason for your thinning hair? A deficiency or something? Hope you don't mind me asking. If you don't want to answer, please ignore,

I've had a few episodes of thinning hair, and do find that layers give the hair a bit more body.

Hope someone is along soon to answer your question!

Adding soft minimal layering can create movement and give the illusion of more volume, but you don’t want heavy layers as that can make the ends look even thinner. Also lightweight volumizing products can help.

Agree with PP about looking at reasons for thinning hair.
You could see your GP for bloods.
And have a look at Philip Kingsley products for thinning hair.
Then consult hair stylist.

Thank for the responses, I’m in my 70’s so assume it’s age that’s causing the thinning.

It is age, you just need to look around and see that many women have thinng hair post menopause. You could buy some clip in hair pieces and use them or opt for extensions, not for length but for volume but do research as sometimes they can further damage hair.

It’s not too late to start HRT if you haven’t already.
Have a look at balance website and app.

I can also recommend hair fibres as an effective way to disguise the hair thinning. You just sprinkle them on the thin areas and it creates the illusion of more hair. Toppik is the best known brand, but there are cheaper alternatives on ebay and Amazon.

Scalp massage with a special brush every single time you condition your hair. My hair went so depressingly thin after cancer and another long term illness. This has been a game changer and so cheap it’s worth a try

Hi there. Avoid heavy graduation or very short layers which can emphasize sparseness at the tips. You can also ask your stylist specifically for weight-removal layers.

I’ve not heard of this? Is it actual hair? I need to investigate.

They are tiny fibres made of keratin or similar that 'stick' to your existing hair and instantly make hair look fuller and disguise thinning areas. You sprinkle them on and they blend into your hair. They come in different colours so you just choose the one closest to your hair colour. They wash out instantly so are a temporary fix but you can use them every day if required.

Before you put any layers in i would try somerhing like
www.lookfantastic.com/p/color-wow-dream-cocktail-carb-infused-200ml

I generally find most beauty products over hyped but I have repeated purchased this and am impressed

Fwiw I put in layers and it made my hair look significantly worse and I really regretted it.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 30/04/2026 01:56

I had a bob of varying lengths for years. My hair started to thin and was looking worse and worse. After trying everything on the market I made a sudden decision to have a pixie. I love, love, love it. It is so easy to manage and always looks good. On a windy day like today I can just style it back to normality with my fingers. I’ve had so many compliments and many people have told me I look younger. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Delphin · 30/04/2026 10:05

Like @AppleDumplingWithCustard said, a pixie, or a chin length cut with ends slightly layered.

I am just through menopause and lost a significant amount of hair within a few months (had to stop wearing longer hair, as it just looked sad and a ponytail would look more like a rat's tail). I might go back to a pixie, which I had in my 30s.

My hairdresser gave me the tip of a product to use pre-drying. It's a heat-protective spray that gives a bit of volume through heat activation/blowdrying. I used to be able to brush and air dry my hair, but I need to style it now, for a proper look that keeps for days (I cannot wash every 2 days anymore, rather weekly now, as skin is very dry now) .

I doubt HRT would improve hair growth, it didn't for me (except if it involved Testosterone, which is hard to get and rarely prescribed, as not being on the plan for women).

Ponoka7 · 30/04/2026 11:09

I'm post menopause, I've got regrowth after taking Glowwa hair food (meno). I also use the L'oreal growth booster range. The hairdresser that I go to is in a salon within over 55 housing and we are all seeing results. I had a nail that wouldn't grow because of an injury and it's growing again.

Yeah I have to say that when I had layers they kind of lifted up more easily and you could see my horrible pink scalp underneath.😱I hate it when people take a photo without warning and I look down and they get the top of my (pink) head. I get irrationally angry although I know they didn't mean it.

I have kept mine in a shortish bob but it is also a bit frizzy - yes, I look a delight. I am also 70, but my hair has been thinning for years now. I tried highlights, layers, dyeing it blondish. Now it's gone more grey I just leave it. I also tried that Toppex but I found the fibres irritating and I kept scratching my head and wanting to wash my hair, so I gave up with it, others probably fare better though.

I had thought of getting a topper - like a toupee for women - but as mine is brown/grey I couldn't see the right colour and I was too nervous to buy one in the end.

CaptBirdsEar · 30/04/2026 16:34

A lot here to digest, then try out, I am finding solace in the fact I’m not alone.
