I Need A Skincare Routine!

PourUsAGlass · 27/04/2026 19:45

Hi ladies, could someone please help a girl out 🙏 currently my skincare routine consists of cleansing wash and Cerave lotion morning and evening. I wear very little makeup.
Im early forties and have fine lines and wrinkles, especially round my eyes and forehead.
Ive googled what skincare routine i need and im totally overwhelmed! Looked on Boots and ive no idea where to start 🙃
Could someone please advise steps and recommend products please? I have fairly normal skin, not particularly dry or oily. Maybe a little sensitive at times around the eyes.
Thankyou!

I really like Liz Earle, not stupidly priced, smells gorgeous and moisturises well. I use the face wash, toner, moisturiser and eye cream

I would keep it really simple to start with and stick to a three step routine morning and evening which takes hardly any time.

Morning

Cleanse - use whatever you like. I don't think it's worth spending a lot of money on cleanser. I like this one: Aveeno Face Calm and Restore Cleanser 200ml https://www.boots.com/aveeno-face-calm-and-restore-cleanser-200ml-10300777Aveeno Aveeno Gentle Cleanser

Vitamin C serum - this is good for brightening and getting a bit of a glow. This one is good: e.l.f. SKIN Vitamin C Brightening Serum 30ml https://www.boots.com/elf-skin-vitamin-c-brightening-serum-30ml-10364970e.l.f. ELF vitamin c serum

SPF - use it every day. I like L'Oréal: L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Clinical SPF 50+ Invisible UV Fluid, UV Protection 50ml https://www.boots.com/new-loreal-revitalift-clinical-vitamin-c-spf-50-daily-anti-uv-fluid-10324151L’Oréal Anti UV SPF 50 fluid

Evening

Cleanse - You can use the same cleanser as you did in the morning....just do it twice if you need to remove makeup.

Serum - I like this bakuchiol one as my skin doesn't tolerate retinol very well: Nive Cellular serum

Moisturiser - this is just to hydrate and again I don't think it's worth spending big money here. This is a nice lightweight one:
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Night Cream 50ml

Once you've got a basic routine in place and you're consistent with it you could add in a retinol two or three times a week but I'd start with the basics first.

Stick with your current cleanser and moisturiser if you like them, I’d add in:

AM: a Vitamin C serum as @GameOfJones recommends, I like the Geek and Gorgeous one (Superdrug/Amazon), after cleansing and followed by SPF

PM: a retinol serum, I like Geek and Gorgeous and The Ordinary, after cleansing but before moisturiser. Start every other night at first to give your skin time to adapt to it.

I’d keep it simple and ingredient-focused so you have flexibility. Morning= a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer with glycerin + ceramides, and a daily SPF. Evening= cleanse again, add one targeted treatment a few nights a week if needed, something like retinol (low strength to start) or peptides for fine lines, followed by your moisturizer. For the eye area, just use a lighter version of your moisturizer or something with hyaluronic acid + peptides, nothing too heavy.

Cleanse, moisturise and uses SPF.

Stay out of the sun, hydrate and realise that genetics play a huge part which you can do nothing about and that it’s a normal part of ageing.

A lot of good routine tips here. Just adding that for around the eyes, use your moisturizer rather than a separate eye cream 'initially'. Most well-formulated moisturizers work perfectly there.

Thankyou all so much for the advice. I get quite overwhelmed when there's too much choice, so really appreciate it! x
