Ladies who smell good: how do you do it?

About 5% of people smell amazing! And they know they do! If this is you, how do you do it?

Also agree with this, do not wash low temp and add scent boosters! Wash at higher temp, properly with a decent powder and dry immediately. My 'luxury' in life is my tumble-drier, can't abide clothing hanging around and it does often 'turn' and smell in the rainy damp county I live in.

Agree with this - the worst smell in the world is a combination of the sour smell where clothes haven't been dried properly, with strong perfume or body spray on top of that mixed in. Boak.

You don’t have to spend loads. Zara does great scents, H&M, &other stories, there’s plenty of cheaper ones about that smell a lot more expensive than they are
&other stories blank pages is one of them

I wouldn’t rule out that in defiance of my expectations you can find scent in H&M or wherever that doesn’t smell like a taxicab. I certainly don’t have time in my life to go sniffing through hundreds of bottles of celebrity-endorsed rubbish to find it.

Celebrity doesn’t mean bad though
j lo glow, Ariana grande, billie eilish…. All have done perfumes that are outstanding

I just think it’s a bit… dismissive/elitist that expensive scents are good. Jo Malone for example is the worst lasting scent and it’s not cheap

I shower and wash my hair every morning and shower every night before bed. Always anti perspirint and perfume. If I’m going out for the evening I’ll have a quick shower before, especially if it’s been warm :)

DamnAFloppyLettuce · 02/05/2026 11:52

I just ask them what their perfume is!
Having said that I hate to walk past women (or men) and get a full whiff of perfume which suggests it's really strong or they spray it head to toe!

I'd only like to smell perfume at a distance of 4 or 5 feet away from someone.

You don’t have to. There’s a range of Zara perfumes formulated by Jo Malone. Fashionably London smells like a three figure scent. I’ll willingly spend a lot of money on perfume in the Liberty beauty hall but equally there are budget scents that are remarkable value and give some niche perfumes a run for their money.

Ooh lovely perfumes that gently linger - Chanel, Penhaligons or Hermes. They just seem to smell expensive, not sure what the secret ingredient is. I love it but realise not everyone does. I like Chanel 19 or Hermes rue de fauborg.

Marketing budgets aren’t spent without reason; they’re spent because a product lacks characteristics necessary to sell otherwise. I barely know who Billie Ellish is because I also avoid that sort of mass-marketed pop music, but remain quite confident in the view celebrity endorsements are absolutely a negative indicator of quality.

The ironic thing is that I’m likewise confident that by virtue of what I’ve said previously, I spend vastly less on scent than most, and still smell much nicer.

About 5%? Where are you making this up from? Surely someone smells amazing if you just like their perfume. Surely you just want everyone to smell neutral, otherwise it'll be like an explosion at a perfume factory.

AgnesX · 02/05/2026 12:29

Shower every day, clean clothes especially knickers and socks. Unscented deodorant, matching body cream and just a bit of good perfume - not a bucket.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/05/2026 12:33

No smoking, clean hair, deodorant and clean coats and shoes.
perfume is jo Malone

LancashireButterPie · 02/05/2026 15:55

The older I've got the more I've realised that it's better to be subtle with scent. I adore Guerlain's "Aqua Allegoria" range. You rarely smell it here but it's much more popular abroad.
To me it's summer in a bottle.

LycheeFizz1972 · 04/05/2026 15:24

I find that lime, mandarin and bergamot gets me compliments whether it’s Jo Malone or a cheap copy!

Aluna · 04/05/2026 15:27

I don’t wear commercial perfume as it is too strong. I wear Roger & Gallet or Caudalie - Fleur D’Osthmanthus, Thé Verte, Cedrat, Tuberose Hedonie or Fleur des Vignes and also 4711 cologne.

I have shower gel + body lotion sets, again Roger & Gallet or Caudalie.

Also - use Bio-D lavender laundry liquid - never use strongly scented stuff like Ariel & Persil which smell of loo cleaner.

NotSmallButFunSize · 07/05/2026 22:32

I do everything mentioned here - showering, clean clothes etc

Unfortunately, I sweat loads (despite antiperspirant) so I just always end up stinking by the end of the day, sometimes sooner.

I think you're either someone who smells nice or you're not! 😫

fartotheleftside · 07/05/2026 22:45

I would steer clear of sweet perfumes, and most contemporary gourmands as they are very sweet.

overly sweet perfumes are extremely popular right now but are actually very cloying and sickly, especially most things these days featuring vanilla, caramel, praline etc. a lot of those celebrity perfumes are very sweet gourmands.

you can find good, fresh vanilla perfumes — I think diptyque does one — but be very selective. You don’t want to smell like a sugar cookie bomb. It’s actually quite an obnoxious way to smell and won’t get you that “wow she smells amazing” feeling.

to me the smells that get the most compliments are usually relatively simple florals, citrus or herby scents.

look at Jo Malone (I like red roses) or Acqua di Parma blu Mediterraneano range. Both are not great for longevity but smell absolutely beautiful. You can always spray on clothes instead of skin to increase longevity.
