Alternatives to my Dyson Airwrap for a trip to the US

Sorry couldn’t think for a better title.

For the past couple of years I’ve been using a Dyson Airwrap to blow dry my hair and it always looks lovely. Forthcoming trip to the US and my sister just reminded me I can’t use it there due to voltage…

Any ideas ladies? Anyone heard of a US airwrap rental service or a clever alternative? 🙏

Following for advice. I have just been looking up dupes on US Amazon to get sent to my hotel

Don't you just need to take a plug adaptor as you would for any other country/UK electrical device, or is there a specific Dyson issue?

Edited

@thedevilinablackdress it’s a different voltage! Likely to damage the device and potential electrical fault in the property! Too expensive to risk.

Apparently it’s worse to plug a US device in over here as it can blow up!

@Uberaddict I would love to know if you find something. I bought a Lilystyler for £40 here before the Dyson. I wonder if they’ve got an equivalent!

I’ve just got a quote to rent an airwrap for 2 weeks in the US… $109 inc shipping 😮 So I’m thinking no to that option!

The plug adapters account for the difference in voltage. Thats the purpose of them.

That’s the point of the plug - it is a transformer to increase or decrease the voltage accordingly.

It doesn’t work I took my ghd curling drying thing can’t remember what it’s called and didn’t work due to voltage

Uberaddict · 25/04/2026 19:25

There is quite a few on Amazon US. I have two trips this year so might try it

thedevilinablackdress · 25/04/2026 19:28

Looks like Dyson has info on this for specific devices, you could look for similar for yours

Otherwise I'm of no help as I just use whatever is in accommodation or air dry.

My shark didn’t work at all even with a convertor

Legsahoy · 25/04/2026 19:32

Thanks all. I’ve found this alternative which is £30 inc tax and delivery to my hotel 😊 Should be fine for a couple of weeks.

GHD travel hairdryer. I actually prefer it to my GHD Air dryer.

I need the all in one heated brush to get the volume. I’ve never mastered the hairdryer and round brush combo sadly

I don’t use that but I do recall my GHDs never worked there and someone told me about the voltage difference. I was travelling there a lot at the time so I bought a cheap pair of a straighteners from there to use while I was there.

Revlon one step volumiser. The US version (used in thr US) worked far far better on my fair then the UK version (used in the UK)

I wouldn't risk an adaptor. I bought a large barrel curling tong there, so hard to get them here, and bought an adaptor. It worked for a while. Then one day we smelled smoke in the house. The product was plugged in, but off, and had managed to start smoking. Needless to say I never leave anything plugged in anymore, and I won't risk an adaptor. Might have been a fluke, but I'm extremely risk averse

KatharinaRosalie · Yesterday 09:22

No plug adapters do not account for different voltage. You need a transformer for that, not the same thing. If your applicance is not dual voltage, it will not work properly in the US. And yes our voltage will fry US appliances.

I bought a cheaper US dupe for this purpose just like you did.
