Why can’t I wear trainers?

Daffodilsinthespring · Today 09:10

I’m late 50s and other than trying the last couple of years, I haven’t work trainers since I was at school.

I quite like the trainers with a dress fashion so so I bought some trainer like shoes. They were so uncomfortable, they went.

I bought some more expensive ones from Clarks but other than in the house or out for something to eat I can’t wear them as they are uncomfortable.

I’ve tried no socks, trainer socks (these just look stupid), the smaller no show sock of numerous brands. The only time they are bearable is with opaque tights and that defeats the object.

I’ve had them on this morning, done some housework, and they have now been swapped for my trusty socks and boots.

Where am I going wrong? I don’t want to wear traditional trainers as I don’t think they look good with a skirt.

Honestly this is like someone saying I don’t like boots.

trainers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You need to try a few out to work out what so try is for you.

the ones you have pictured are definitely fashion trainers and I find them pretty uncomfortable too.

Isobel201 · Today 10:56

have you looked at skechers?

thedevilinablackdress · Today 10:59

For something similar, but likely to be more comfortable, look at Camper or ECCO.

TheOGCCL · Today 10:59

I think it’s a misnomer that as trainers are casual and maybe for sports they are automatically comfortable, trainers are like any shoe, you need to find a good fit. For example for me I don’t like heavy trainers, I like something very lightweight. Skechers are a good shout (but too wide for me).

thedevilinablackdress · Today 11:00

Oh, and I usually wear ankle socks because I like that look and my ankles to be warm.

@Daffodilsinthespring , they just don't suit your feet.
There are lots of different trainer-like shoes you could try but try them on in a shop.
Some will have a little bit of a heel to them e.g. Asics GEL-KAYANO 14 - Women Shoes | Foot Locker UK , New Balance 530 - Women Shoes | Foot Locker UK

Some will be flat inside e.g. adidas Gazelle - Women Shoes | Foot Locker UK

I appreciate that none of those are your style but they might show you the different soles.

Hotter are a good bet: White Metallic | Women's Leather Trainers | Marianne Trainers | Hotter UK. You could try Gabor.

Johnny Lew has a good choice IMO: Women's Trainers | Women's Plimsolls | John Lewis & Partners

When you try them on, the should feel really comfortable.
What types of shoes do you normally wear?

Edited

My gazelles have a huge arch support in them. I rarely wear them actually because for my flat feet it feels like walking on a golf ball.

They're uncomfortable.

I love trainers and wear them all the time but have to order at least 15 pairs until I find one pair that are comfortable.

No joke, I'm in the middle of trying to find new trainers and already sent back 9 or 10 pairs.

And this is someone who roughly knows what to avoid (high heel drop, narrow toe box, too little or too much bouncy innersoles etc)

I don't have any big shoe shops near me so need to order online.

EmeraldRoulette · Today 11:27

Those look like they have very flat feet with no flexibility

I can't wear a converse for the same reason

You might need to try a different style of sole

They're uncomfortable.

For me, yes. But DD with her big instep loves hers. She needs the golf ball for support.

I love my flat converse.

I agree with PP, you need to go to a big shop and try a load of different styles to find what’s best for you OP.

Flat converse are an abomination.

ToadRage · Today 19:55

I had Skechers and never looked back, they are the most comfortable shoes i own, no need for wearing in. I have 3 pairs. I won't wear anything else now. On the pricey end but worth it but occasionally I will wait and go to an outlet for cheaper ones.

Tuhafeni · Today 20:09

I really struggle with trainers too- both the feel of fashion trainers and the look, I’ve got Sketchers for the gym/ Padel/ classes but, while amazingly comfortable and indestructible they are not for wearing in public (for me, anyway.)

Anyway, I wear these quite often now and they work well with shorts, dresses and rolled up jeans. They are super soft, comfortable to walk in and feel more like a European leather trainer than a fashion style www.softinos.co.uk/womens/isla

I have a pair of Fitflops I wear for sport, but my go to are Gola. I have loads of pairs and I love them.

eatreadsleeprepeat · Today 20:40

Like anything else you need to, go and shop in person, try lots of makes and styles. Somewhere like John Lewis is ideal. Shoes and trainers don’t just vary in length and width, some are very flat (converse) some have more of a natural sole shape, some are deeper and have more height and are easier to get your feet in and out of. I like Adidas, Hoff and Gabor but that is because I have learned over the years that they work for my feet. I did realise a few years ago that going up a size meant I could wear socks more comfortably.

fbibones · Today 20:56

I have the second pair in your photos and they’re not the most comfortable. Very little padding and flat

Spaghettea · Today 20:57

Those silver shoes aren't trainers. You need something like these for day to day walking. Anything with a slightly curved sole and some structure.

Why can’t I wear trainers?
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Today 21:00

@Daffodilsinthespring in my experience, only trainers made by sports shoe companies are careful. I love my Adidas Gazelle Bolds. I used to have those silver Clark’s - they were really uncomfortable!

Backawayfromthesausage · Today 21:01

onitsuka tiger, the comfiest shoes I’ve ever worn, they also have hidden arch support inside, and fhey do all rhe colours, great wirh dresses as a very near profile,

Yeah but they aren’t stylish with dresses etc, which is what I think she wants.
