Flat sandals with straps that don't make me look like I'm 80

Feels like I'm searching for something that doesn't exist.

My mobility and chronic pain has come to a head, and I can no longer wear my usual Birkenstocks or wedges that I'd wear in the summer. I need wear flat sandals, with a bit of structure over my toes and a heel strap, and can't have a chunky or thin sole. Can't tie around my ankle as sometimes one of my ankles swells from oedema. I also have a very high instep, so can't wear ones that cover my full foot.

I want ones where I can pull the ankle strap over my ankle, or a velcro strap so that I don't have to bend down too long to get them on.

All the ones I've found look like what my nana wears, with elasticated backs.

I liked these ones https://www.office.co.uk/view/product/office_catalog/2,60/5346085216 but DH laughed jokingly and said his mam would wear them, so didn't get them.

Budget is around £75 a pair. I'd like an everyday pair and a pair I could wear if going out to a beer garden or to look a bit fancier.

Oh no!

Lots of nice ones on this thread but those original ones are hideous. I’m 57 and no way would I wear them. I think my 90 year old mum. Might though.

Well lots of young people this season would .., you are not up to speed with fashion trends

I recently bought these from Rieker/Remonte: https://www.rieker.co.uk/products/black-hook-loop-sandals-for-women-remonte-d7950-00?variant=52019313672459

They only come in black though.

What looks like a buckle turned out to be Velcro. The soles are slightly shaped so they feel supportive. They seem comfortable although I haven’t worn them properly yet (bought for summer concerts when I have to wear black). But I’ve had Rieker sandals previously that have turned out to be comfy and hard wearing.

I realise that the ones I posted don’t fulfil most of the OP’s criteria. Don’t you hate it when people do that ;-)

The Sketchers £55 sandals quoted above are £38 on Amazon !

Jesus Christ, I'd think I was at the Green Party Conference if I saw folk wearing the ones on this thread..

I think your DH probably knows the square root of F all about what’s fashionable in women’s footwear. Ugly sandals are defintely cool ( but I wouldn’t even put your choice in that category. ). I think they look perfectly current. I’ve got some sandals by Flower Mountain who are a Japanese trainer brand that I’m guessing your DH would guffaw at but they’re certainly not granny-ish. ( expensive though… I’m not recommending them ). I love a Teva Hurricane which are very casual but so so comfortable. Teva do less athletic versions with a bit of a stack but they’re all based off a hiking sandal so practical. Good with a midi dress or wide legged trouser.

Typical MN shoe thread 😀

The Josef Seibel ones are particularly egregious, being ugly, deeply unfashionable, and looking cheap despite their price. Horrible.

The Whistles ones are nice.

@Ophir didn’t anyone ever tell you not all attention is good attention?

but @Ophir is correct. Those Rosalie sandals are hideous and in no way on earth stylish - which is what OP asked for.

Young people will not be wearing hotter, moshulu or Skechers

I think it IS possible to combine comfort & support & style.

But so many of these companies fuck it up by adding extraneous details, such as silly floral patterns, weird "ornamental" stitching, unnecessary appliqué flowers etc - or by mixing lots of colours & patterns on the one sandal style. That's why so many of them look like such a dog's dinner ...!!! I much prefer mine to be quite minimalist in style.

It’s when they try to make them look “fun” 🙈

Ophir · Yesterday 10:02

But the Camper ones posted above look nice, and the whistles ones: thanks @EleanorMc67 ive ordered the pewter ones as they look really similar to a beloved pair of kangol ones I wore to death twenty years ago

I really like the ones you posted from Office - ignore your husband. Think they are about the best pair posted in your budget.

Really like the Whistles ones too - but over budget.

I like the Outnet for sandals.

For the avoidance of doubt, these are grannie sandals.

i am talking specifically about the shoe the OP has posted

Do you HAVE to wear sandals just because the sun’s out? I never do, I think they’re all so ugly and grannyish so just wear regular shoes all year round. Never had a problem with fainting with heat or whatever because it’s warm.
Just an idea if you already have shoes that support your feet!

I get very hot feet in summer, sandals feel so much more comfortable!

rootootoot · Yesterday 10:59

They all look grannyish. Can you wear trainers instead?
