Ideas for a wedding outfit with black skirt and white shirt

I'll be attending a wedding in July. I usually would wear a dress, but this time I'm thinking black midi circle skirt and crisp white shirt/blouse. I'll be wearing black Dr martens (either shoes or boots, haven't decided yet), maybe black fishnet tights, and probably a smart black fitted Jaeger blazer. I'll also probably wear a sparkly coloured brooch either on the jacket lapel or at the throat of the shirt. I'm 5'5" and size 12ish. Hoping to keep under €100 total. Important not to end up looking like a waitress!!!!! Any suggestions?

Sounds like a funeral outfit to me, minus the sparkly brooch!

Why choose black to wear to a wedding?

Might it not be too hot especially the jacket? The outfit itself sounds fine for autumn & winter but not the height of summer.

What suggestions? It sounds like your outfit is planned ???

I'm hearing this kind of vibe (1st photo)- which is lovely, but you do run the risk of a waitress. So either you need to go extreme in some part of the shape - really full or long skirt, maybe taffeta or some other material (second photo) or colour (third photo). Alternatively, if you're fixed on the midi black skirt - look at getting a really interesting cut of the blouse, but even then I think white cotton always veers towards waitress, so maybe rethink the material or the colour - even polka dots adds some interest (fourth photo).

Either way in July I'd skip the blazer/jacket as that could end up looking more funeral director or the celebrant than waitress!

And of course no photos loaded

That’s a work outfit or a funeral.

PippaToryFripp · Yesterday 08:23

You're realise you’re going to look like a member of the venues banqueting team?

UnlikelyIntimacies · Yesterday 08:27

Brooch or no brooch, that sounds waitress’s to me.

SausageRoll2020 · Yesterday 08:30

That's not a suitable wedding guest outfit at all.
Black and white are not colours which should be worn by a wedding guest.
A coloured maxi skirt with a complimentary top (not a shirt) would be much better.
I'd avoid the docs and fishnets too unless there is a specific theme to the wedding you've not told us about?

AnnPerkins · Yesterday 08:38

A black skirt with white polka dots wouldn't look waitressy. I love the big skirt and crisp shirt look, very Kristin Scott Thomas in Slow Horses. But she wears it with incredibly high heels, I can't really picture it with Docs but it could work if that's your usual look.

I wouldn't bother with a jacket.

How could you know that? It depends on the wedding.

MrsTravelBug · Yesterday 08:41

It doesn’t scream wedding to me, are fishnets appropriate wedding attire?

I like the outfit posted above with the polka dot blouse to avoid people asking for their dinner!

Twattergy · Yesterday 08:41

Ditch the jacket
Wear shoes that are not Docs
Pile a lot of chunky necklaces
Glamorous make up/hair

Otherwise it'll look a bit basic IMO.

Iloveeverycat · Yesterday 08:44

My DM went to restaurant once with a white shirt and a black skirt. Someone said to her I will show you where to hang your coat and took her straight through to the kitchen!

HortiGal · Yesterday 09:15

Sounds pretty basic with a ‘trying to be edgy’ flung in, is it your work clothes?
Colour exists! especially for a summer wedding.

hellospring26 · Yesterday 10:12

That is not wedding attire.

Crikeyomalley · Yesterday 10:31

If you are interested enough in style to post here please don't wear this - it sounds like basic waitress wear and and DMs are not appropriate for a summer wedding

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 10:38

You’ll be mistaken for wait staff!

AnnPerkins · Yesterday 10:55

There are some nasty people on S&B.

Have a think about how you're making someone feel when you're amusing yourselves with your clever replies.

And maybe think outside your own experience. People have all sorts of weddings these days, I went to one with a Steampunk theme once. Not my style but I didn't stand there admonishing everyone for inappropriate wedding attire. Some of the dresses I see suggested on here for weddings look like they're straight from an 80s Freemans catalogue.

StationJack · Yesterday 16:45

I used to be a waitress and the uniform was white top and black skirt.
Customers in a white top and black skirt or trousers looked like waiting staff.

It’s only been in the last few months that this board has been nasty. It used to be a welcoming place with lots of good advice.

Backawayfromthesausage · Yesterday 18:57

I’m not sure if this is a joke post to be honest, op as that’s not really an outfit most would feel appropriate for a wedding.

you can do the skirt and shirt, but I’d make it a coloured skirt, olive, plum, teal , floral etc and a nice cropped fitted jacket in a matching or contrasting colour.

but fronting up in a long black suit doc Martin’s and fishnets, is going to make you looo like a nessa wanna be,

Joolsin · Yesterday 21:21

Well, how dare I come on this board with my lack of style, that's me admonished good and proper. Luckily, I am old and not sensitive or could have been rather upset by some of the replies. Thank you to @AnnPerkins and @Overtheatlantic for your supportive comments.

I posted in good faith looking for links to actual clothing items in actual stores/online from those who purport to having good knowledge of what's currently available, not to have a bunch of bitchy posters cast their judgement on how I like to dress. The wedding party know me, know how I like to look and will not be remotely disturbed by my choice of footwear and clothing colour.

@OrchidsBloomimg, I really love the outfit in your last picture - the skirt is perfect and the polka-dot blouse is something I wouldn't have thought of - could even prevent my looking like a waitress! 😁 Thank you!

@Joolsin I think your style sounds fabulous, I’d just add a bit of colour to avoid bring mistaken for a caterer. Polka dot blouse is good. Coloured jacket? I’m imagining something fitted and quite short in a colour contrasting with the blouse - eg pink polka dot blouse, red jacket.

Melarus · Today 08:39

I think your outfit sounds great, and would have been perfectly suitable for any wedding I've ever been to.

Last week I saw a small wedding party doing their photos in front of a pub (in London) - most of the women were in Docs.
