I've been working remotely for years now but next month I have to go into an office and I think I need to smarten myself up a bit and I could do with some help. Please!

I'm overweight and short and generally wear black v neck jersey dresses, black jersey wraps and if I have to leave the house, trainers. I sometimes jazz it up a with a scarf but overall the look is fat, short, widow. I know, I'm painting such an attractive picture!

My trainers are not trendy, they are slip on ones for wide feet. Like these:

I don't like anything structured or uncomfortable so prefer dresses made out of jersey material as it doesn't need ironing. I'd like some new wide fit, comfortable trainers or shoes and a new bra as I only seem to have 1.

Can anyone help? Or am I a lost cause? Thanks for any suggestions. Budget is healthy but must be online and must have the ability to return.

Thanks in advance!

Weird Fish do some nice jersey dresses which I wear to the office. I like the Tallahassee dress. Comes in loads of different fabrics. They bring out different patterns and colours every year Despite being an apple, the shape suits me.

Shoes, well I'm a recent Fitflop convert. Their shoes are really comfortable and not "fugly". I have the Mary Janes and the ballerinas as well as a couple of pairs of sandals.

You really need to give your actual clothing size (and height if relevant).

And a specific budget!

What size are your feet?

Also - what’s your work context? How formally are you required to dress for this meeting? And is this a complete one-off, or is it likely you’ll need suitable clothes for regular office attendance?

I second fit flops for shoes. I wear their boots all winter and their sandals all summer and have to go into the office for meetings twice a week. I used tochave plantar fasciitis and they were the only things I could wear all day - so comfortable!

Work wear - I really recommend M&S black wide leg trousers - they've got an elasticated waist so are really comfortable but look really smart. I wear either a shirt and tank top, or white stuff tops with them. All very comfy but look smart enough!

Spongblobsparepants · 22/04/2026 21:45

How smart do you need to be? I love Forgotten Tribes for loose, unstructured clothing. Tend to find that better quality it is, the more casual looking you can get away with. How about wearing those clog type shoes, which tend to fit wide feet quite well and look better than trainers.

I am also short and (formally) fat, with feet almost as fat as they are long - I have shoes in sizes between 4 and 6 depending on width! Additionally, thanks to lipoedema am unable to wear anything that exposes the cankles/legs or upper arms, so jersey was my friend.

Look on Uniqlo too, although can be difficult to gauge sizing.

Also wanted to add - it looks like harem pants are making a comeback. I don’t pay much attention to what is actually in fashion, but find a decent pair of those covers a multitude of sins.

Spongblobsparepants · 22/04/2026 21:47

Another thing I always pay attention to now is my skin, nails and a bit of makeup, as well as simple silver jewellery. I think if you’re confident about your face and hair, it really helps.

No idea what clothing size

Okay … You’re proposing to spend hundreds of pounds online, without a clear idea of your measurements or likely size in various shops / brands? Please say you have a relatively new tape measure to hand, @Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere?

And I sincerely hope no posters will direct you to sites lacking really detailed size and measurement guidance.

(The last poster I recall who didn’t know her clothes size turned out to be a very different size to the one she’d been wearing for several years!)
