Where does one get a proper school uniform for a little boy??
I've been to Mothercare, Marks and Spencers, BHS, Sainsbury's and Adams. They all have polyester stuff. I'm hunting for cotton, or mostly cotton. But everything is "easycare" now.

M&S has some cotton, have a look on the website.

SmugColditz · 19/06/2008 22:37

you can get it from Marks, I'm sure.

Hang on.

nancy75 · 19/06/2008 22:38

you probably need a proper school shop - not many of them about, what area do you live in?

Scuff · 19/06/2008 22:38

M&S usually have cotton, non-iron trousers.

OverMyDeadBody · 19/06/2008 22:38

have you tried john lewis?

ball-achingly expensive

ChocFudgeCake · 19/06/2008 22:50

You are so fast!
I'll take a look to the websites. Even John Lewis is doing easycare shirts, the cotton ones are £10 each . My plan was to buy a few. How many does one normally has to buy anyways?
And, SlartyBartFast, I do enjoy ironing a lot, it relaxes me, and it is soo good for my back that I'm always looking forward to ironing
Well, actually not. But I'll have to take the extrawork, because I dislike v much polyester.
I leave in North-East London (it does exist)

2-3 trousers, 5 shirts, 2 jumpers
I love the M&S non-iron shirts, they last well and stay crisp looking (DH has them too, in a bigger size obviously).

ChocFudgeCake · 19/06/2008 23:01

Thanks, ChippyMinton, I had no idea that more than 1 pair of trousers would be needed
I know polyester clothes last and look well, but it does not feel good on my skin, and also since DS had eczema a couple of years ago I'd rather stick to natural fibres.

Boys + mud + spilt lunch + paint = clean trousers every day or so. That's partly why I get the non-iron stuff, so I can wash & dry overnight if necessary. Actually my boys only have a jumper each, because it is sooo man-made it's practically dry when it comes out of the machine.

Have you seen this? www.iwantmymum.com/site/articles/where-to-buycotton-school-uniform

SmugColditz · 19/06/2008 23:14

Unless your son has serious eczema I would get the tough non iron easy care trousers. Any others will be in rags after 3 months, so unless it's an acceptable cost, try him in the cheap tough ones first. 4 and 5 year old boys can do things to trousers that would make the Spanish Inquisition flinch.

waffletrees · 20/06/2008 09:43

SmugColditz - I agree. Boys that age just need cheap trousers. My DS1 ruined 7 pairs of trousers this year. One pair lasted a day! Not that I am bitter!

frogs · 20/06/2008 09:46

John Lewis do thick grey corduroy (100% cotton) ones which last a bit better. But they are v. expensive, and child may not appreciate looking different from the other boys.

horsemadgal · 20/06/2008 10:36

Asda do 100% cotton grey school trousers and white shirts. Around £3.50 each.
Bit hit or miss if they have them in stock though.

ChocFudgeCake · 23/06/2008 21:51

7 pairs of trousers in one year??

I am obviously new in the field.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow it is a great article. I will go to Asda tomorrow. Icod, I do not relish ironing 4 pairs of trousers, but I would not wear polyester clothes just to avoid ironing. So I will do my best to find cotton trousers and then we'll see how how long it takes DS to destroy them. During the whole year in nursery he had 2 track suits, only last month I saw holes on the knees and I have put there 2 cute patches, he was first unhappy about the patches, then the teachers said they liked them v much, he is now quite content.
So, voila, problem solved

Glad it helped! Bought all our uniform in chain stores and despise its synthetic polyesterness. Hope you can find something nicer which doesn't leave you bankrupt.

stitch · 24/06/2008 11:58

i think it is impossible to get cotton uniforms. unless you have them made

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 24/06/2008 12:35

It's a long time since I read the Annalisa Barbieri article, but she says (I think) that you can get cotton school uniform, but a lot of it comes from specialist shops/websites catering for eczema sufferes and can be expensive. On the other hand, if it's available in Asda, that's likely to be fairly cheap.

Twinkie1 · 24/06/2008 12:37

I buy everything for DD from John Lewis - it is sooooo much nicer than the other places and really lasts!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 24/06/2008 12:37

I just got a 100% cotton school cardigan for £3.50 in Asda.
