How to style this skirt

I've finally scored this Toast skirt on vinted after much stalking. I'll wear it with Birkenstocks when it's warmer but am a bit stumped for footwear for now. I've got blundstones and some chunky Cos Chelsea boots but they just look odd with an expanse of tights from boot to hem. Should I be wearing leggings instead of tights and then coloured socks? That sounds not right but I think might be what I've seen people do.

I've got various jumpers and cardigans that will pick up the colours on the skirt. How else would you style it?

I don’t think leggings have anything to do with that skirt. High ankle or mid calf length boots would be best (but absolutely no need to buy new boots expressly for one skirt). So, your boots plus a decent expanse of chunky sock above.

But it’ll come into its own in warmer weather, with clogs / fisherman sandals / mules, etc.

I’d wear either pair of boots with some socks then bare legs. If it’s a bit chilly I add leggings that are shorter than the skirt so they aren’t seen but provide a bit of warmth.

Thanks that was what I was thinking. I see skirts like this styled with boots and bare legs and think wtf, how can that work in the UK for most of the year. Short, preferably thermal leggings make sense.

Black opaque tights and black ankle boots. I'd wear a black jumper too.

It's funny how strongly people can feel on different things! Personally I think skirts look much better with a bit of leg visible between skirt and boot. And that leg could be bare or in tights.

I think this is partly because it sort of balances things out: voluminous skirt - slimmer leg - chunkier boot. Out, in, out. The lower body equivalent of a waist! I also personally don't like the thought of the skirt material snagging and catching on the boot fastenings.

If you're averse to tights but not bare legs, I'd get thick wool socks in one of the skirt's colours. They're magical for keeping you warm.

I think boots and bare legs look ridiculous. If it's cold enough for boots, it's too cold for bare legs.

If I owned that skirt, in cold weather, opaque tights picking up a colour of your choice, with laced ankle boots ;less cold same tights with the flat closed toe shoe of your preference ; warmer/ warm, ankle socks and closed toe shoe or fisherman's sandals.

@InconvenientlyMaterial , the boots I was thinking of were chelsea boots.

@Thechateau , mary janes, ankle socks and a blouse in summer.
'ballerinas' and a vest top?

😄 Boots and bare legs (with a bit of sock) just seems so natural to me!

FruAashild · 21/04/2026 15:02

I'd wear that skirt with tights and a chunky shoe, either loafers or lace ups. Ankle boots are best with above the knee skirts.

ETA: And this is how Toast style it as well.

Thechateau · 21/04/2026 15:33

Thanks all. I'm not cool enough to carry off shoes and socks alas. Shoes and tights perhaps but I have no chunky options in my wardrobe. I have a couple of denim tops that will work when the weather is nicer I think

Hard disagree, @FruAashild - this is how it’s done:

(Hope it’s apparent that I genuinely do not care, or judge, how other people choose to cover their legs in real life.)

I don't like that look.
