Best way to remove underarm hair for a nine-year-old?

My dd is 9 and half and has started growing hair under her arms, she is getting grief at school and during netball games (wears a sleeveless dress) from other children and wants to get rid of it. I am wondering what is the best method to remove it.
Hair removal cream or Shaving?

Shaving is probably faster and easier

IeatPotNoodles · 19/04/2026 21:31

What about a trimmer? Less risk of cuts

MxCactus · 19/04/2026 21:32

Women's electric shaver - that's what I used when I first got underarm hair. Much easier/safer for a young girl that razors I think

Sauvignonblanket · 19/04/2026 21:40

I got my dd a wet dry rechargeable electrical one, maybe Braun, which works well and seems pretty safe

maryberryslayers · 19/04/2026 21:47

Definitely a lady shave, it will be good for her legs and bikini line too. Teach her to tie her hair up before she starts though, you don't want her leaning forward and buzzing off the ends of her hair.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 19/04/2026 21:56

A dress with sleeves and duct tape the rude children's mouths shut. She's nine FFS, far too young to be facing painful red infected hair follicles, nicks, and insanely itchy regrowth.

Summerhillsquare · 19/04/2026 22:22

Small children do not need to shave their legs and 'bikini line ', Jesus Christ.

Are you joking? She’s 9!!

tellmesomethingtrue · 19/04/2026 22:42

The school need to be dealing with the bullies at school. She shouldn’t have to shave. She’s a kid.

sunflowerdaisies · 19/04/2026 23:20

Mine started shaving at 10, it bothered her even though no one else mentioned it - she also does a sport with sleeveless top and lots of time spent with her arms up! She used a decent quality razor and shaving gel and has no problems.

The poster wasn’t saying she should do her bikini like now! I read it as the shaver would be good for that in the future

rootootoot · 19/04/2026 23:44

I started growing underarm hair at 9 and I’m glad my mum supported me in my wish to remove it. You sound like a wonderful mum. I used an electric razor/lazy shave and managed fine.

fashionqueen0123 · 19/04/2026 23:46

I helped mine shave it. She can now do it herself.

MyTrivia · 19/04/2026 23:47

Shaving is never a good idea - the hair grows back thicker and coarser and you have to do it every day. Waxing is much better.

  1. At nine? FFS.
  2. The regrowth will show between waxings.
  3. Waxing makes the hair grow back darker and thicker because of the trauma to the follicle from ripping the hair out.

Bless her @Snackdealer. I was the same age and well done you for supporting her to be comfortable in these situations!

I would suggest a razor. Easy enough in the bath or shower (even a sink wash where necessary). Girls can be so cruel and then some at that age, so hats off to you. 💐

No it doesn’t. Because the end has been blunted it feels thicker. Nothing can make it actually grow thicker or coarser.

Rubbish! If that were the case I would armpits like a gorilla because I’m in my 60s. It actually disappears as you get older, I barely have any there now, or on my legs, but all shaving does is give a blunt end of regrowth.

How do you think your hair follicle knows it’s been shaved and to grow thicker?

Obeseandashamed · 20/04/2026 08:15

Hair removal cream. Painless and won’t leave any shadows like shaving does

HoraceCope · 20/04/2026 08:18

a lady shave is safer

Bezaz · 20/04/2026 08:30

A razor, or better and safer, a lady shave, will take seconds in each armpit. And she doesn't have to do it every day unless she wants to, she may decide she can cope with week or two weeks of regrowth (especially in the winter or when she's not playing sport). It puts hair removal entirely in her hands & makes it "no big deal" - whereas waxing or hair removal cream take time, make mess, require special appointments arranged by mum and can cause allergies and irritation. For a nine year old, a quick shave is surely the simplest and least fussy solution.

I’m a beauty therapist. Removing the hair from the root weakens the hair follicle over time, especially if it’s done when the hair is at anagen stage.

if shaving has worked fine for you then maybe you just don’t have much body hair or it’s not coarse. If you shave, for a lot of people you’re left with little red round dots around where the hair was cut off at skin level.

Ive been waxing my daughter’s body hair since she was 16. She’s now 22 and the hair grows back much finer.

In what world does a nine year old even need to think about her ‘bikini line’ …. She’s a child for goodness sake.
