MOB - lost cause!

Dahlia1234 · 19/04/2026 17:33

I really need help.
DD gets married in September, nice do in a hotel.
I am a lost cause to dress. I'm 56, a short arse ( just under 5'1) and a size 24, so very chunky.
I'm really struggling to know what to wear. I've seen a dress that I know would suit me, but it's not formal enough (link attached). I will be wearing a hat and a bit of a heel as well. Don't like traditional MOB outfits ie dress with a jacket etc. I think I have a reasonably youthful appearance so don't want to look too mature as I don't think it's me. Ideally I'd like to wear dusky pink accessories to match the bridesmaids (did this at my other DD's wedding so would like to follow suit) so ideally whatever I choose should go with that. But oh my days, I'm struggling. Help me oh wise ones!!! https://valerievintage.co.uk/products/hearts-roses-london-curvy-kylie-green-polka-dot-swing-dress?variant=49656930730325&country=GB&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOoo6FI84EoDg99VQX-JoglvsScf9yjerz8MYfFNLIgwR-WXAjOSe9Yw

Hearts & Roses London | Curvy Kylie Green Polka Dot | Vintage Style Dr

Forever inspired by the style of the 1950s, this stand out green vintage dress is beautiful with its bright white polka dots scattered all over the swing shape dress. The sweetheart neckline gives that feminine flare while being flattering and easy to...

I think that dress is lovely and with the right accessories it looks formal enough to me
What does the Bride think?

Controversial but do you think you might like to try and lose some weight before the wedding so that you have more choice?
I'm going to be a mother of the groom and am trying to drop some weight because I'm sick of limited choice in the shops. I hate online shopping.
The green dress is lovely.

I am trying, yes, as I have for most of my life. Still gonna be a short arse though, and loads of the dresses around today are for people of average height or taller. I know I could get anything altered but thought I'd try and get something that doesn't need ideally.

Shopping in general is a nightmare if you're not bang average i think. I am tall as well as fat and it's so hard finding stuff that's long enough in the body/ arms whatever.
You have my sympathy.

I think the dress you've chosen is lovely

We'll find out when it arrives! I have said I'll try it and if we're not sure or it's not right, I'll keep looking 😊

I got married in a dress like this. I would loose the polka dots and go for a plain version as you may distract from the brides dress. I wore a little contrasting bolero, had a broach, a satin belt and a hair piece and gloves.

Fooledaroundandfellinlove · 21/04/2026 20:21

The dresses that mad dilemma posted are the same shape but more elegant for a wedding. Maybe try one of those?

Thanks for your input and opinion. The dresses you've linked, while lovely in their own way, are really not me. I appreciate your advice though.

I ordered the Anya dress and jacket from Monsoon. I'm a Monsoon size 20/22. I looked like a sofa. It also felt very cheap for the cost although it looked luxe from a distance. It was also way too long and I'm 5'5".

So I'm glad it's "not you" OP so I didn't have to stage an intervention!

The sleeves were swoon-worthy though.

I am going to be Mother of the Groom later this year and I have had several well meaning friends and colleagues telling me what I "should" wear. So much so that I am now keeping my outfit a secret (although I have consulted with the bride because her opinion matters).

If you love the dress and feel good in it then go for it, splash out on some kind of headwear, some heels and a nice bag. Much better than trying to wear something that isn't you. I bet you will look amazing.

That’s a lovely dress and there’s lots of green jewel headbands out there if you were looking for a bit of bling

If you want to go for the rockabilly look try https://www.vivienofholloway.com/women-c70/dresses-c10 with a petticoat they look fab.

Thanks for the link, though they all seem to have short sleeves and I hate my bingo wings!

There are some lovely ones on there, particularly like the Isabella one. Might order a couple and see how I go on!

I think that dress could be dressed up. A hat, heels , jewellery and a corsage would make it look great.
