What to wear to the races when you are 5 ft 3, and size 14 with chunky legs and problems with your feet that rule out heels or sandals? Oh and on a budget too … arrgghh help me out!!

I didn’t report you BebbanburgIsMine
but Mumsnet has requested that we stick to the specific subject of this thread which is fashion and post ethical discussions under a separate topic.

I see my comment stating facts about the realities of horseracing has been deleted.

I wasn’t rude to anyone, I didn’t swear or be offensive to anyone, but someone who doesn’t want to read the truth reported me anyway.

No matter, I’ll still keep fighting to get the facts out there, keep campaigning to get this cruel barbaric blood sport banned.

This is ‘Style and Beauty’ - the poster is requesting fashion advice, as the purpose of S&B. You are derailing the thread.

You can start your own thread elsewhere on MN. There are plenty of other sections - AIBU, CHAT etc.

@BebbanburgIsMineGood. Take your poison elsewhere. You know nothing about horses or racing. The rest of us want to discuss a fun day out and clothes.

minnowonthesay · 20/04/2026 20:02

I think it’s important to remember that without horse racing the race horses would not be bred.
They live a wonderful life, are cared for better than some humans especially by their grooms.
You are of course entitled to your opinion, as am I, but in the interests of balance it’s important to hear the other side. I do wonder where it would all end, do we ban zoo’s, boxing, Crufts, gymnastics, rugby, Formula 1, anything that involves any danger really.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 20/04/2026 20:08

Please don’t believe this poster. You cannot train a thoroughbred at 6. It’s too strong and it’s risky and dangerous ar that age. No one would leave it so long. They have been bred to race at 2 because they are a precocious breed! Not all race at 2 but they develop very rapidly and race over shorter distances carrying less weight. Trainers are experts in knowing when a horse is mature and ready.

@DaisyDoodler Do go and have a look at the horses in the parade ring. You will be amazed at the physicality of them and the beauty. They will be fit and gleaming. Look for muscle definition and a bit of swagger! Have a great day.

@minnowonthesay @MeetMeOnTheCorner - posts deleted to stop the derail…now back to outfits for a day at the races. 😍

BebbanburgIsMine · 20/04/2026 19:51

Oh, and I forgot to mention, horses being raced at 2 years of age.

Their skeletal system isn’t fully developed til they are 6 years of age.

This is not relevant to the post by the OP who is asking for style advice for a corporate event it is not her personal choice to attend.

I suggest you start a new thread if you feel so strongly about the ethics of horse racing.

Thank you

EsacalateThis · 20/04/2026 20:48

What a mess this thread has become.

Please carry on and focus on the clothes.

@DaisyDoodler do you need any help with finding outfits on Vinted?

Been around horses all my life, so I do know a thing or two.

It’s not poison, just the truth.

Try some charity shops, I volunteer in one there was a lovely navy phase eight dress in it today, not my size sadly for sale at £7. We have just put out our summer stock. I bought a dress in another charity shop recently for a party, really pretty a little bit fifties style. Got it for a fiver.

@DaisyDoodler Unfortunately posters like this one appear when they track the words horse racing. They are not around thoroughbred race horses: I can guarantee that. They have no idea! So have some fun choosing clothes and enjoy the day. If you haven’t been before, racing is a day out for everyone. Chester racecourse is picturesque and was founded in 1539. It’s a course where riding and positioning of the horse matters. Getting boxed in makes winning very difficult as there’s no long straight to pull out wide. I’m sure you’ll have very good company and a relaxing day - even if it’s work!

minnowonthesay · 21/04/2026 09:52

There was a lovely dress posted on here yesterday, I’ll see if I can find it, I’m not a dress person but even I liked it!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 21/04/2026 11:22

I think bigger florals are around this year and I thought the Boden one was great too! It’s wearable to any “event” all summer long.
