Keeping warm wearing “spring” clothes

Looking at MN’s spring fashion round up and what’s in the shops and wondering how on earth one is supposed to keep warm wearing these without ruining the outfit by sticking a jumper or cardigan over the top. Bare arms, bare legs under skirts slit to the thigh. Even at work the AC means it’s often colder in spring/summer than in the winter. Am I the only one who lives swathed in cardigans?!

I do love a cardigan.

Carefully chosen knitwear doesn't ruin an outfit.

I live in Scotland, layers are required all through the Spring and Summer. 🙂

Oh me too. But statement sleeves don’t play well with a cardigan and it’s hardly the same
look if you wear a waistcoat as a top (per the MN spring style post) and then have to put a sweater over the top is it?

I see your point.

Statement sleeves will just have to wait for Summer (if we get one 😆 )

Maybe wear the uniqlo heattech tshirts underneath? I use those this time of year. Short sleeved and long.

I often used to ruin a lovely outfit by wearing a cardigan, jacket or jumper. I now layer up with heatgen tops underneath my pretty tops.

How come fashionable people never feel cold?

I’m in Scotland and have several Uniqlo heatgen long sleeve T-shirts, I find the beige or pink wide necked ones discreet under paler tops, black or navy for others. Also M&S Rosie silk vests and woollen socks don’t get put away for summer.

I'd rather stick to my cardigans. After all you can get them in almost any colour and style you like to fit most outfits.
Layering underneath just wouldn't work for me. Today for instance it was windy and partially cloudy meaning I was fine in my cardie but when the sun came out I was melting and had to take it off. Kinda hard to strip layers if the under layer is a thermal vest!😂
Also quite like a blazer or quilted jacket (or the classic denim jacket).

Besides you have to remember the clothes in the shops now are usually for the season to come meaning you aren't necessarily expected to wear them now.

It has to be over 23 degrees before I am warm enough to take my cardigan/jumper/jacket/tights off.

PinsAndThrums · 17/04/2026 22:27

Whenever one of my Scottish-resident cousins suggests I should move back I say that if I did, I would never wear a pair of shorts again...

Im a fast walker in a hilly area so I tend to overheat quickly. I'm usually walking several miles a day as well so my cardie is off and on every 5 minutes!😆

Ha - I said much the same to DP tonight. I had a wander round the clothes in M&S today before doing the food shop, and everything was proper “high summer”, linen, sleeveless type things. The other people milling around were, like me, in big coats still. (Also in Scotland, the wind today was like a knife.)

willowstar · 18/04/2026 10:34

Definitely uniglo heat tech tops and vests still on here for me in East Anglia. And my knee high woollen socks! House is cold as we have no oil and can't afford any at the moment because the price is so high, so am still pretty chilly.

I have loads of heat tech tops. Thicker for winter and thinner for just now. I like the low/scoop neck as they are barely visable. You can push the sleeves up a bit for wearing shirts with cuffs turned up.

I have "summer" jumpers in lighter colours - also living in Scotland.
