A year to make myself over - where to start and how to go about it.

I'm going to he 50 in just a few weeks over a year. I decided at my birthday last year that I wanted to make myself over (is that even the right term?) I've spent the last year losing nearly 4 stones (with at least another 3 to go) and growing my hair out. I'd really like to focus on my clothes and make up now.

I'm at a loss as to where to start though. I have a real love of vintage clothing and I'm hoping to get into some more of this as my weight comes down further. I could also do with some decent clothing for work (I'm a PA if that's relevant) and love classic/smart/vintage styles.

I also really want to learn to do my make up properly. I'd love to know where I'd try and learn how to do it. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Congratulations on your weight loss! That’s a great achievement. I’ve done a makeover on myself over the past 18 months and began by quitting alcohol. Then I got my eyebrows done with a natural microblading technique. The thing with makeup as we get older is that less is more. I would go to a makeup counter in John Lewis, perhaps Trinny, and ask if they do lessons? But at 50 I would also focus on skincare if you don’t already. Sorry, I just jumped all over the place.

Hi OP. For makeup and dressing, understanding your undertone first actually shapes everything from foundation to clothing colours. You can perhaps check video tutorials online for makeup, skincare & fashion tips for 50s. You can also try a counter consultation or with a makeup artist. Hope this helps!

Indeed, congratulations on your weight loss.

For make up I’d suggest the Selfridges Beauty Concierge experience. Not sure whether it’s still done in the salon or on the shop floor, but the MUA will look at all their brands to find whatever works best for you. The cost of the appointment is redeemable against any items you buy. Available at all Selfridges branches I think.

Obviously individual cosmetics brands may offer a similar thing - but I’d rather take the opportunity to look at a variety.
